OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

I do! My kid had to be rushed to the hospital earlier this week, was gasping for air with full blown pneumonia, and had to wait 6 hours to be seen by anybody! Pretty shitty situation for anyone with kids who are prone to severe illness when sick.
Oh honey that’s fucking terrifying. I’m sorry. How’s the little faring now? Was is straight up pneumonia or RSV/Pneumonia? Which hospital? I know Sick Kids has been slammed.

He's better, turned around pretty quick once he got treated with antibiotics and puffers. He tends to get it bad whenever he's sick so there's some viral induced asthma going on (no signs of asthma when he's not sick). Will be good to have the puffers around in the future, could help us avoid a hospital visit every time he's sick. In this case the illness wasn't anything severe (he was never tested so unsure of what it was) but it still did turn into pneumonia.

We called around to get a gauge on how busy things were, we're in drivable distance to 3-4 hospitals and we ended up choosing Markham -Stouffville because it was by far the least busy. 6 hours, and being a kid that was struggling to breathe, that was expedited too. He definitely jumped the queue. And the tweet is accurate; violent cough cough coughs throughout the waiting rooms in the hospitals. It's crazy.

Scary for that to happen. Glad to hear he's on the mend. Sorry for that GIF, was posting sarcastically.

I do think a big part of the logjam is because family doctors and walk-ins won't take anyone with covid symptoms so they're all going straight to the ER these days. But still, our health care is trash

mask usage appears to be less than 5% everywhere right now. there will be a shitload of shocked & angry people if a mask mandate suddenly comes back.

Really scary. Sorry to hear. Hopefully he is better now.

We really need to revamp our healthcare. It's sorta ugly out there right now. If folks don't want to mask during the warmer months, fine, but I don't mind going the Asian route and normalizing it during winters. This has become a bit of a crisis.

yeah, we've seen the warning signs for years.

lack of family physicians, hallway medicine, lack of LTC beds, hospital capacity/limited new builds.

the writing has been on the wall.

at the same time, health canada needs to give its head a shake and grant an exemption to french language requirements for packaging of essential OTC medications. it's just ridiculous that tylenol/advil couldn't with english only packaging couldnt even be sold to hospitals (let alone OTC).

also, walk ins don't really exist any more.

My wife's clinic sees people with COVID symptoms.

Her biggest time sink is ever growing mental health issues. Treating them is hugely time consuming. She also spends a inordinate amount of time doing essentially social work trying to sort people's lives out. There's no capacity in this system to help with this stuff so she has nowhere to send them, the buck stops with her.

did i miss something? i thought it was just a recommendation.

and uh, didn't his kid have cancer? pretty important for immunosuppressed not to get all the shit flying around right now...
