OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

My favorite is that when any celebrity dies, there are immediate rumors that it's because they just took the vaccine. Apparently Bob Saget got his booster last month so that's a thing today. Same thing happened with Betty White.

Wait till they find out about all the non-celebrities that died.

is it just me or are people getting fucking stupider? christ.

It is not just you. This was the root of my argument for mandates back in the early days. The true nutters were always going to keep spinning and twirling their way down the spiral of stupidity. The "hesitant" will piggy back on that for as long as they're allowed to but will conform as soon unvaccinated life is slightly more difficult than vaccinated life. That leaves the true believers who need to be carved out of polite society wherever possible.

“This vaccine will be ready in March,” Dr Bourla told CNBC. He added that they’re “already starting manufacturing some of these quantities at risk”.

Dr Bourla said that the vaccine will also be aimed at battling other variants of the virus. He acknowledged that it remains unclear if a variant-specific vaccine is needed but that the company has moved to create the vaccine because some countries want it to be available.

Tough decision for them. What should the split be between manufacturing Omicron doses and OG doses?

It's just the one study, looks like. Haven't dived into it fully yet.

a few thoughts
- seems like the good thing is that symptoms are connected to viral load (ie: less pre symptomatic spread?)
- i wonder what impact not having symptoms on day 5+ has on spread

Dumb question, but why can't they be combined?
Not dumb. I think this goes back to the pitfalls of the mRNA platform. They tend to target a very narrow sequence (albeit at remarkable effectiveness). Creating a broader, combined vaccine tends to be more challenging and right now we we need speed, which mrna excels at.

But yeah hopefully we get a broader product eventually. Pfizer/Moderna is just buying us time till we get there on the other ones that are currently in development. And one more thing.. A boost on Omicron will likely give us a boost on Delta and the others well. Not to the same extent as the OG covid booster, but it should help top us off relatively well. That's the beauty of getting different boosters designed for multiple variants; it broadens your immunity and your immune system does not forget these things.

A new study involving several dozen participants has found evidence suggesting exposure to a common coronavirus cold may offer some protection against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

Researchers from Imperial College London in the United Kingdom say their study examines how the presence of T-cells at the time of SARS-CoV-2 exposure can influence whether a person becomes infected.

So I posted this last year I believe and it was brought up again today. My brother (in the field/not the one with long covid) has long theorized that this may be the case with the flu and this could be our destiny with covid (i.e. a higher proportion of asymptomatic cases once immunity broadens):

In the study:
Approximately half of influenza infections were symptomatic, with asymptomatic individuals transmitting influenza to 6% of household contacts.

IFR of the flu is likely closer to 0.05% than the 0.1% often mentioned. With covid we're getting closer, but not quite there yet. Will depend variant to variant I imagine, much like the flu.

Caveat: the flu's transmissibility doesn't appear to be anywhere near covid's so that could be an issue!

So cynical. Let's just look at the facts here. Did they take a booster? Yes. Did they then die? Yes.

The data is pretty clear here, folks.

It's not great when 90+% of the elderly/vulnerable who will be taking up the majority of deaths all took the vaccine. Odds aren't in the favor of #TeamVax.
