OT: MLB Thread

Never been to Portland in my travels to the Left Coast. Sports culture? Yeah, maybe not the same as industrial cities out East. We saw how well hockey did in Atlanta, which is magnitudes bigger than the 'Peg. I think that's a bigger issue than the population and, to some extent, income.

I worked security for Claridge back in 1990-91 when Charles was running it from offices in the old Windsor Hotel building. I've been in his office as well as his former residence on Fordham Rd. in Westmount and was also in Stephen's then-apartment downtown and Sen. Leo Kolber's Summit Circle residence (Kolber was - and likely still is - a thorough-going bastard who treated the hired help like something he found on the bottom of his shoe. I wouldn't shed any tears if he were put through the wringer in court)

Stephen back then was seen as the family fcuk-up. His father gave him several do-nothing jobs just to keep him out of trouble (rumor was that he partied back then like Galchenyuk parties now)

Expos revival seems dead with Bronfman in tax scandal and Coderre losing power to the lefties.

Really sad news about Doc. he was great.

Plante said on Monday that she would still like to see the Expos project come to fruition. But I doubt she's going to green light any public money toward a stadium and despite the fact that I no longer pay taxes there and want very much for the Expos to come back, I don't think she should be scratching out any cheques to the Bronfman consortium. They have enough money (or access to sources of money) to finance the purchase of a team and the construction of a stadium themselves. They're just looking for a free lunch on Jos. Publique's dime like every other pro sports owner out there. We're talking about a city that hasn't spent a dime on infrastructure (aside from band-aid type repairs) since the great build-up in the 60's for Expo 67. Now it's all crumbling and band-aids are no longer going to suffice. Keeping the city from literally falling apart or disappearing into a giant sinkhole is going to cost big money and is a more important priority (as are schools, hospitals and mass transit) than "bread and circuses" such as sports stadiums, Formula E races, concrete tree stump art installations and festivals.

The truth of the matter is that if Bronfman and his cronies like Rossy wanted to, they could find or raise all the cash they need to buy a franchise and build a stadium. The Paradise Papers demonstrate that Bronfman knows how to get his hands on money when he wants to. So let him finance the dream of securing his father's legacy by bringing the Expos back. The citizens of Montreal can't afford it.

:rolleyes(2):

He was only relevant when he was playing for the Phillies. The Jays were a joke when he played in Hogtown although I'm sure that Sportsnet and TSN will only focus on that. If Eric Lindros, Ron Francis, Brian Leetch or any other guy who had bothered to have a cup of coffee while wearing a Toronto uniform had died instead of Halliday the headline on Sportsnet and TSN would be "Former Leaf dies in plane crash"

Moronic statement.

Did he win a world series in Philly?

He is a Blue Jay. 12 of his 16 seasons played in Toronto. There is a reason he signed a 1 day contract to retire as a Jay. Cy youngs, all stars, most complete games, dominant pitcher. That is the beauty of baseball. You can measure an individual despite the teams achievements.
