OT: MLB Thread

Was channel surfing yesterday so I only caught the tail end of his impassionate speech but one of the Sid & Tim guys on Sportsnet was telling employers they should just let their employees off work during the upcoming Jays playoffs game as if we were all about to watch the space shuttle launch for the 1st time.

Please tell me he was kidding and this was a comedy bit.

Last time I got a day off due to sports was the day of Game 7 of the 1994 Stanley Cup finals. I was working at the Royal Bank in Vancouver and they decided to close all branches at noon, partly because people were so fixated on the game (which was going to start at 4pm Pacific time) that no work was getting done. People were lining up to get into bars at 9am so they could grab a good table. Another reason was because they expected big crowds and possible trouble breaking out, which was bang on.

Funny though, when the Expos played the "Blue Monday" game in 1981, I still had to go to school. When Henderson scored the goal in 72 I watched it at school. My dad had to work and only got to see it later that night when the game was rebroadcast in prime time.

But what is Team Canada compared to the Blue Jays, right?

I doubt it.

I'd be pretty surprised if that were true, but...

Why would that surprise you? Both of the previous pre-season series that they've held at the Big O have drawn huge crowds even though the match-up's weren't very sexy. This time it's the Red Sox, who have legions of fans all over the continent.

That they would be sold out or almost sold out on day 1. I'm sure they will be sold out, but seats are still available as of today.

Marlins resign Ichiro to a one year contract. He's definitely done. I guess the Marlins want bum bums in the seats to witness his 3000th hit. Talk about desperate.

Unfortunately the Yankees' bats have been lifeless for a while now.

They weren't even supposed to be there (everyone had them last in the division going into the season) but still sucks watching them go down with that little of a fight.

While Bird was a solid replacement, not having Teixeira in the middle of the lineup was a big loss.
