Has anyone watched the German reboot of All Quiet on the Western Front yet? I enjoyed it even though it strays pretty far from the novel's plot and spends no time at all portraying the main characters' experiences during basic training or their sadistic drill instructor. But it is viscerally on point and the battle scenes are brutally realistic.

Hanks being terible in it is really surprising given how brilliant he was as Mr.Rogers. I forgot I was watching Tom Hanks in that film after 5 minutes.
One other issue with the Elvis film, is Baz Luhrmann really does "Overdirect" his movies.

So I'm late to this but this Elvis movie rocks.

Only bad thing about it is Tom Hanks.

But the kid playing Elvis absolutely crushes it.

I also really enjoyed it. They did a great job. Butler is going to be up for an Oscar and should probably win.
Yeah Hanks was tough to take. Fucking Cornel Parker though.

Yeah, I guess that's a reasonable excuse. Just seems that you'd pick a... less weird accent.

That said... it didn't really bother me.

Loosely. The characters are the same and some of the plot is portrayed but most of the book's plot is ignored.
