OT: Movies/TV Shows

Useless trivia:
About a decade before he was Hannibal in "the A-team", George Peppard was the lead in the television film series "Banacek":

It had decent ratings to the effect a 3rd season was greenlit but Peppard walked away from the series because of a divorce settlement which said his ex-wife would receive a larger percentage of earnings from said series in the future. Guess he'd preferred getting 100% of nothing (he had a down cycle in his career until he was given the role of Blake Carrington in the ABC TV series "Dynasty" a number of years later). He lasted a few weeks & was fired because of "creative differences" as he claimed the role was too close to "JR". Interestingly, this made him available for the role most are familiar with:

I remember he was married 5 times and divorced 4 times. I assume his death precluded what would have been his fifth divorce.

He was also most famous for being Audrey Hepburn's love interest in Breakfast at Tiffany's and as a German WW1 fighter pilot in The Blue Max.

Peppard hated MR.T so bad they ever spoke on-set. I do get it. I once listened to a Mr.T Howard Stern interview and wanted to scream at how annoying he was.

I mean he built an entire legacy out of that character he made, with no actual talent to back it up. Good for him.

Didn't T rub everyone the wrong way? Just a very obnoxious dude.
Seemed that way to me as well but the guy was VERY popular during his "peak". Probably suffered from "oversaturation" as the guy had his own cartoon show, cereals, etc., I think in Peppard's case it was more a case he disliked Mr T getting all the attention. Peppard was the one time 'big movie star' & and here was a guy that really wasn't even an actor getting all the fame.

Space Ghost, Voltron, & Thundercats. Still three of the coolest shows I’ve ever seen.
If we're just talking cartoons, those plus Transformers, G.I. Joe, Spidey and Spidey and his Amazing Friends (80's series), Silverhawks, MASK, and so many more. Also lots that just have nostalgic appeal, even if they weren't very good.

And that's just cartoons. Lots of tv series that were fun as fuck.

Just the openings/songs of the 80's tv stuff was independently awesome. Often the show would suck, and yet the opening would be great still.

I don’t wanna brag….but I had Boulder Hill. 😎

trap door that opened into a jail cell, tourette gun that pops up tumbling the boulder down, gas tanks that turn into machine guns, armour spiked facade that swivels out from the mountain to fortify the base.

….living the dream.

I was thinking I had no idea what mask was but that toy definitely triggers a memory. But i don't think it was a toy in our house. must have been a friend.

Pretty fucking cool. Damn.

I never used to get the "base" toys. Like I remember G.I. Joe had those battleships and other things. He-Man had the castle I think. They were always so expensive, and I was so much more into the characters and the vehicles, which you could get like 10-15 of instead of just 1 base. But still damn cool.

So...when the pandemic started and I had much more computer time than I wanted, for whatever reason, I flashed back and remembered some of these toys and decided to check them out on ebay, to see if people still had them and what they were doing with them, and how much they were going for. I was stunned with what I found, to say the least. Many, many people had bought them and kept them unopened in their original packaging!! And they were selling them for 100x or more of the original cost. I couldn't believe it, that these things had become collectors' items.

Apart from Transformers and G.I. Joe, and also Thundercats, which were primarily the ones I bought back then, there were these two limited runs of actions figures based on the Marvel and DC characters. Some of you might recognize these:

Anyway, I saw these and decided I really wanted to buy one, for nostalgia sake, but only in good condition, one of the nice ones. The majority of them that people are peddling on ebay are in bad shape - weathered, cracked bubble, cardboard ripped off where price tags were, or price tags still on them which can never be removed, rips and tears. Most of the ones for sale are priced at way more than they're worth, and so the only way you get true and proper value is through the ebay auction process.

So, I started getting into it, and I bought one. It arrived and it was so fucking cool. It was like I was 7 years old again. The fact that someone kept this thing for 40 years in perfect shape...it was mind-boggling. And, of course, now that I had one, I was like, oh, well maybe I'll just keep an eye out and buy one or two more of my favorites. I've probably bought 15 of them now. Part of the fun is tracking them down in great shape - there's so few. And then when one pops up, it's auction time, and that's pretty fun too. I'm not buying all of them, just the ones that I actually liked as a kid. A fun and hilariously expensive-ish hobby, but I could resell them as a group for much more than I bought them (much much more because they're all in tip top condition), so I do view it as more of a fun investment than a hobby, to be honest.

But anyway, I fucking love the 80's.
