OT: Movies/TV Shows

the ultimate sign of a dullard is someone who thinks "real life" stories are inherently more "serious" than fiction.

I always find it kinda crazy how little it’s discussed that literary fiction is the only real medium that gives you unfettered access to what it’s like inside the human mind.

No conversations with friends, movies, music, etc etc can really mimic the nonstop dialogue inside one’s own head, the way a great novel does.

"I like reading bios and histories not fiction" = you are an unintrospective superficial bore

Didn’t you claim movies can’t be made or lost in the editing…..and also hate ‘Thin Red Line’ & Malick?

If I’m remembering that correctly, I’d say that disqualifies you from commenting on anyone’s ability to be a serious person when it comes to TV & Film. 😋
Malick is a pretentious, self indulgent "auteur" who desperately needs an editor.

I love zeke taking the stand in this page, and yet famously always calling comic books "baby cartoon shit."

Even though his absolute fave movies of all time are based on their stories.

heh i love a good superhero movie. but i also love trolling you. so it's tough sometimes.

but nah, they're not my favorites.

but there's no reason the comic book form can't be as well written as any other form.

If you thought prior Guardians of the Galaxy movies were tear jerkers, wait till the next one where Groot learns to say his last name.

Some comic books are as well written as some of the best novels and tv shows. Not lately, but still.

Maus, Watchmen, From Hell, Dark Knight Returns, all reach the level of proper literature imo…

With Watchmen & From Hell Alan Moore made the most of the medium and went where books & film can’t.

I do think comic book films so far haven’t really been looking to achieve much more than escapist entertainment…..but there’s nothing about comic book films as a genre that prevents it from being just as deep as any other genre.

Vaguely on topic, Michael Chabon’s Pulitzer Prize winning ‘Kavalier & Clay’ about two Jewish cousins who create a comic book character during the Golden Age of comics*, (overlapping with WWII) is a great goddamn read.

*(homage to the creators of Superman)

Loved it.

But i have to say i'm not actually gonna read any graphic novels most likely.

Been a very long time since I read this, but I do remember it being excellent.
