Well it would give Carmy something to react to… as opposed to wallowing in his PTSD loop. The reason you liked Napkins and Forks is because the protagonists were vibrant

And Carmy was benched

Characters are the story, just not the main character or the other interesting ones. And not if anything they say or do matters in any way outside of the solitary episode they say or do it in.
