OT: Movies/TV Shows

Eh, you’re ignoring what a sci fi is.

It may have fantasy aspects but it’s definitely science fiction. You’re being myopic.

It's fantasy that uses scifi aesthetics. It's generally put in the category of "Soft Sci Fi", in contrast to "Hard Sci Fi", but even that is a bit generous to it.

Just putting aliens or robots in your story doesn't make it scifi.

Sci-Fi is not only about attempting to describe actual realistic science-based advancements (not just using 'hyperdrive' like magic), but is about how those advancements impact and/or help define what it means to be human and how humans work together in society.

The king of sci-fi describes it like this:

"Science fiction can be defined as that branch of literature which deals with the reaction of human beings to changes in science and technology." - I.Asimov

Encyclopedia Britannica says: "science fiction, a form of fiction that deals principally with the impact of actual or imagined science upon society or individuals. The term science fiction was popularized, if not invented, in the 1920s by one of the genre’s principal advocates, the American publisher Hugo Gernsback."

Obviously there's lots of crossover, but in general Sci-Fi is more of a philosophical exercise using realistic science to discuss the human condition, whereas Fantasy is about telling grand heroic mythical tales about battles between Good and Evil. And while there's crossover, Star Wars in particular doesn't cross over much - there's zero sci-fi there other than the most superficial trappings.

wtf do you all think a space opera is? Jeeze.
There is lots of space opera out there, and lots of it masquerades as science-fiction, and people will quibble with semantics...I mean, it's the internet, and there's nerds involved...Star Wars nerds too.

IMO, everything but 2001 is space opera.

Ha ha, not quite, but really, if you have some kind of technology you don't really explain it or has no basis in real science, that's space opera.
