OT: Soccer thread

You know what’s looming? The Arnault family (richest people in Europe and owners of LMVH) and Red Bull now control FC Paris. The other Parisian team. They just got promoted to Ligue 1.

Is that all there is? El Farolito soccer team chases glory — and faces its limits.

El Farolito goes for another amateur title this weekend while confronting the ceiling of what’s possible for a working-class, immigrant-run club in a closed American soccer system.

For a lot of us, this is the life we’d like to have,” López said. “You wake up for breakfast with the group. You nap. You’re focused. No work. No commutes. I’ve actually had time to watch tape and build the game plan instead of doing it while driving around.”

That quiet luxury is rare for this team. In San Francisco players juggle construction shifts, kitchen jobs, delivery routes, or full-time college. Right now in New Hampshire, they’re full-time footballers — if only for a few days.

Canada looking really nice to start the gold cup. Young inexperienced team full of new kids, too.

Sigur just scored his first for canada. Beauty play by David to spring him, and david's been great all around.

honduras is not a team that gives up many goals, and canada could have had a whole lot more than 2 that half.

absolute destruction. 5-0 and coulda beeen way more and maybe more to come still.

for the first time canada not only looks good, but they actually look kinda deep.

Canada (#29 world ELO rank) this year:

vs MEX (#24) 0-2 - Nations League semis
vs USA (#44) 2-1 - Nations League 3rd place game
vs UKR (#27) 4-2 - Friendly
vs IVC (#65) 0-0 - Friendly
vs HON (#68) 6-0 - Gold Cup group stage

this is a solid level of competition they're succeeding against.

Canada dominate 1st half of the QF vs Guatemala, but only score one goal on a very iffy PK.

And then Shaffelburg takes his 2nd yellow to get red carded in first half injury time.

Canada looks good in the 2nd half despite being down a man the whole half but concede a goal for the tie.

No extra time in this one so straight to PKs if it's tied after 90 minutes.

Approaching the 90th minute now but should be a good amount of injury time still. on TSN 2 or 3 or something.
