OT: The News Thread

As a political strategist, here's the problem.

The media strategy that the Fords were using had a chance (a minute one) at working as long as the accusers were the Star (who has a political agenda involved in destroying the mayor), Gawker (a less than reputable blog site) and Somali drug dealers.

The Globe and Mail is Canada's paper of record. It is home to the best print journalists in the country. There is no ragging the puck and blaming the media anymore. It's also spread far beyond the mayor. This is total Ford brand contamination now.

If City Council goes 60 days without a quorum at Council meetings (not inconceivable during the summer), the Minister of Municipal Affairs is empowered to declare a by-election in Toronto. As of now, that remains the only responsible action Toronto City Council can take.

Not a whole lot of substance or detail in that story as I see it quoted there. The globe says "Doug ford was a drug dealer". Ok. Not rejecting that out of hand, but I don't see a lot of meat in that story as its quoted there.

Well it might be pertinent...you know, considering his and his family's position.

If true, are they still involved? Do they use police resources to protect themselves and their "friends"?

How? 30 years ago when he was a stupid kid he sold drugs? That effects who he is today and how good he is at his job how exactly?

If anything being a successful drug dealer in your 20s is positive business experience.

Of course I am for real. Are you for real suggesting that what a guy did 30 years ago when he was 20 matters at all today? Especially when you are only talking about hash.

Who gives a shit. That is missing the point.

Umm yeah. Of course it does. This is real life and adult choices have consequences.

Do you want a family to hold a lot of power that has shown a history of criminal enterprise?

Selling hash in your 20s isn't showing a history of criminal enterprise. Its nothing.

You make him sound like he is Tony Montana.

Calling a kid selling hash a criminal enterprise is the only thing completely lacking ground in reality here.

Kids sell weed and hash. Lots of them. They grow up.

Did you read the allegations in the Globe piece? I am merely responding to that.

But for the record...teenage drug dealers should not be running offices that hold power in politics.

Am I the only one that finds it odd that this stuff wasn't discovered before he was even elected? Do they go through any types of background checks?

I work for the govt and the checks that they do are quite comprehensive. Do they not have similar background checks if you are running for political office?

I don't think there is a body that would do this, but I could be wrong....more likely opposition would have to pony up the dough for any investigation.
