OT: The News Thread

he says that now. but wait until it starts impacting his (and all his new conservative buddies) follower counts.

I guess we'll see.... I am not as certain as you about his intentions

i'm not as certain as you about his intentions.

it'll be interesting to see what wins when "crushing bots" collides with his beliefs and worldview in terms of who the bots are and what the bots support.

i hope "crushing bots" wins.

he wants to make it less dependent on ad revenue... we'll see if he pulls it off

All i'm saying is that I'm open to the possibility of being pleasantly surprised...don't feel the need to join the large angry chorus predicting death to the platform
You suck at joining the outrage brigades. Should be deleting twitter angrily because of management while using TikTok instead.

it says a lot that me stating that I'll keep an open mind is viewed as some sort of foolish blunder
that's not what I said though.

I genuinely don't believe much of anything Musk says. he'll walk it back or change his mind in a week or two anyways. he's already started seriously moving the goalposts on 'free speech'.

even more of a reason to actually wait to see what happens...

Problem is that Elon is completely full of shit. He loves censorship and has censored the fuck out of anyone he had the power to censor whenever he's deemed it necessary, he just loves being the one with his hand on the switch. Elon has threatened stock bloggers with lawsuits, threatened companies that employed his critics with lawsuits, fired employees for public statements, canceled a journalists Tesla X order over an article Elon didn't like, fired employees for reporting racist remarks in the workplace, etc, etc, etc...it's not a short list of Elon using his position and power to shut other people up.
He’s also talking about “free speech” as it exists in the US as a universal ideal when 1) free speech laws differ from one democracy to the next. 2) freedom of speech is a right vis a vis government, and he’s living in the land of private enterprise, which have to contend with things like defamation laws, anti terrorist laws, terms of use, bad actors and so on.

he may not make it better but he should be able to figure out a way to make it profitable

which will make it as shitty as facebook and insta.

twitter was literally run without profits being the top priority which is what made it the best.

elon shouldn't actually care about profits (and claims his goals are much loftier than that) so hopefully he doesn't make monetizing it his main priority, because that will ruin it.

Twitter's inability to make a profit has been a long-running joke. I agree it shouldn't be his top priority, and probably isn't.

I don't really see the point of Musk doing this to begin with but he did it. So I'm with CH1 in that we just have to wait and see what happens. Speculation is kind of pointless in this case since we have no idea. Twitter could remain pretty much the same, or this could be the opening scene of the next Bond movie.

Elon typically invests in big ideas and not cared about profits. Not sure how much money the boring co is making. Yet at least.

doubt monitoring Twitter is his primary goal. If it was there is no sense taking it private. Get in and out and take your profits.

i dont think elon has ever taking over an established entity before - so it will be interesting to watch

No Time To Tweet - In Daniel Radcliffe's first instalment as 007, James Bond must infiltrate Vladimir Putin's underground lair before he can launch an international war on NATO. But at the last minute, Bond cannot access the secret code when his Twitter account is banned. Was this all just a technical glitch? Or has Elon Musk joined the New World Order in a final showdown with Western Democracy?
