OT: The News Thread

yeezy s were all the rage a few years ago despite being ugly as sin but i had thought they were over already. my nephew was big into them and always wanting me to buy him some like $1500 version and i would make fun of him for ever thinking of spending that on any shoe let alone that ugly shit. now he's smartened up and is wearing some throwback jordans like a boss.

So are Crocs, allegedly, but they’re also far too ugly to wear.

Agreed, yeezy's are just ugly enough that they could be worn. I had a pair of 350's a bunch of years ago. Adidas cloudfoam really is/was the shit until the new zoomx's came out.

Anyone have any insight about what's going on at RBC? I had a fraudulent charge on my Mastercard like 6 weeks ago, immediately dealt with the merchant on it and reported what happened to the RBC Risk Centre and was instructed to call. I've literally been on hold for 3 + hours on multiple occasions and never got through or got disconnected by them. The people answering emails in their messaging centre take days to get back to me and always instruct me to call in. It's unbelievable. I've never had this kind of experience with a bank...usually they are all over this kind of shit.

It appears Elon has officially become the owner of Twitter, and he’s already fired several of their top executives, including their CEO, CFO & the head of their legal department.

good summary:

I 100% believe that Elon doesn't understand what free speech is and how it properly intersects with functioning democracy, nor does he understand what Twitter is, what it does well, doesn't do well and what positive role it can actually play in society.

I actually agree with that "it's not a digital town square" comment 100%. It's a marketplace of ideas and just like you can't sell cocaine at the mall without your anchor tenants leaving, you can't sell fascism, racism, etc at the marketplace of ideas and expect your advertisers to stick around.

You know what the digital town square is? Facebook. Where people using their real identities self select into overlapping, connected, local communities and share the shit important to them.

And it's fucking terrible.

Elon may or may not understand what free speech is but when you're that rich you don't need to care about free speech in the aggregate because your wealth ensures that you will always have it even if others don't. A system where one can only get as much freedom as they can afford works well if you're a multibillionaire who can afford it. I've seen very few truly wealthy people even pay lip service to free speech or democracy aside from Bill Gates, and even he likes to have things his own way.

I really don't get why so many people are in love with Elon like he's something different from any other rich asshole. The super wealthy are not our friends. They only want to use us. We need to remember that no one gets that rich by being nice to people. And when you get away with and profit from being an asshole it becomes habit forming.

Fred Trump's original plan was to have his first born son, Freddie Jr. take over the family business. But Freddie wasn't an asshole like his dad and didn't want to become one, so his father cut him off and gave the business over to his second son Donald, who was by that time already a bag of shit without a shred of human decency.

The people who join the Trump cult don't do it because they're enamored with his wealth. What they really want is the ability to be shitty human beings like him and get away with it. That's worth more than all the money in the world to these people.

in summation: eat the rich.

Elon had pretty good PR for a while, and managed to convince a good chunk of people that he’s some kind of super-genius, visionary real life version of Tony Stark.

That, combined with SpaceX’s success is the source of a lot of his popularity.

That mask has definitely slipped quite a bit in recent years though. So a lot more people do realize he’s just another rich asshole who’s come to believe his own press clippings and who’s entirely too in love with the smell of his own farts.

someone more authoritative than me should confirm, but when I just went to report a tweet for containing misinformation... I was no longer able to find/select misinformation/disinformation as a 'rule violation'...
