OT: The News Thread

Don't you mean nepo baby who won't be missed?

(for the 50% of the board that has him on ignore, this is one of my many fuck yous to WeHave)
None of them deserve sympathy. If you've got a quarter million dollars of disposable income and the hubris needed to think that your money turns you into a superhero who can defy the laws of physics then you have too much inherited wealth and the world is better off without you.

The Titanic has been visited a bunch of times, and people have used submersibles to visit the deepest part of the ocean, which is like 3x the depth of the Titanic. Cameron said it in the interview, the safety record of these things is amazing

So I doubt any of these paying passengers thought they were a "superhero defying the laws of physics." Would I love to think if I had the cash to do this I'd be smart enough to spot or research that the CEO was cutting corners and that people who know alot about this had concerns? Sure. But one of the guys on board was a former commander in the French navy who led a bunch of research and dives on the Titanic, who had been down there 37 times. So I guess he got fooled too.

Then there's the 19 year old kid who was scared to go but did it for his dad. An article gets posted with quotes from his aunt saying she can't breathe thinking about what's happened to him. And you say the world is better off without him.

Seriously what the fuck is wrong with you?

You have facts or just or is this something you want to be true?
Stockton Rush, the CEO of Oceangate, was born on 3rd base. His grandfather was the one who went from rags to riches (Director of Standard Oil) This wealth enabled young Master Rush to go to an Ivy League school and then (according to an article I read) "meander his way through various jobs and experiences..." In other words, he didn't have to work to keep a roof over his head. It was all just handed to him.

Conclusion: nepo baby.

Hamish Harding lived in Dubai and apparently made his money selling private jets. There doesn't appear to be much info on his early life and his family but he went to Cambridge, which isn't cheap. I think it's safe to assume he wasn't born in poverty. He's also the one who's son decided to go to that Blink 182 concert (and tweet about it) while the search for the sub was in progress because he's as big a shitbag as his dad.

Conclusion: inconclusive but leaning toward nepo baby. More investigation required.

Shahzada Dawood was the Director of Dawood Industries, a chemical conglomerate founded by his grandfather. Again, inherited wealth.

Conclusion: nepo baby. His son Suleman died with him and was, by definition, also a nepo baby.

The only one aboard who wasn't a bored billionaire looking for a quarter million dollar thrill was Paul-Henri Nargeolet, the only Titanic expert on board. He was Director of underwater research for E/M Group and RMS Titanic. He had dived to the site over 30 times before and had supervised the recovery of artifacts from the ship.

So out of the 5 people killed, only one was a contributing member of society. The other 4 were basically parasites.

I don't get the trend of hating very wealthy, successful people. Yes, some people get their money from mommy and daddy and are A-Holes, but there are some really driven, hard-working people that made their own success. I just mentioned James Cameron. came from a really crappy town in Ontario. Saw 'Star Wars" and said he'd do that. Made sci-fi masterpieces. Saw deep sea exploration and said I'll do it and did.

the kid is distinguishable from the rest
No the French Titanic expert on board deserves sympathy. The kid would have grown up in the same wealth his father did and been an even bigger asshole. The farther away each generation in a wealthy family gets from the original source of wealth the bigger assholes they become. Anyone who watches Succession knows this. And for a real life example look no further than the Trumps. Fred Trump was a small time slumlord. His son Donald was exponentially worse than him. And his sons are dead from the neck up but will die never having worked a day in their lives.

Ya but you grew up poor and there's no way that kid could have been a bigger cunt than you.

Cameron is wealthy because he worked for it and had success. He is self-made. I have no problem with self-made men and women. The clown who owned OceanGate was born into wealth and privilege. He never had to struggle. He never earned anything.

Oh ok so Cameron is cool, but his kids are nepo baby parasites who deserve to die in submarines.

There was no due diligence done by any of these Richie Rich's. They just paid their money and went. A quick Google search of the company would have revealed that the CEO didn't give a shit about safety.

I don't make the rules. It is what it is. As long as his kids are taught not to assume that having wealth means that you can defy the laws of physics or that it entitles you to think you're better than anyone else and if he makes them work for their inheritance then they have a shot at becoming good people. If however he indulges them and uses his wealth so that they can lead comfortable lives and be oblivious to the problems of the world then he's doing them a disservice and making them into contemptable pieces of shit. That's what Trump did to his kids.

So now there are exit ramps so that kids of rich people don't deserve to die. How kind of you.

You know exactly jack shit about this kid.
