OT: The News Thread

Something I've generally noticed with Gen Z is that they're pretty obsessed with the idea that they've invented fucking everything in the modern world. Including vacation now, apparently. But yeah, a huge portion of their trends that they've "invented" have been recycled shit from when some of us were young.
Mirco retirement (vacation)
Quiet quitting (doing the minimum)

Gen Z is the poster child of tech and social media making us dumber. I had hope for them, but they honestly suck.

Says every generation about the younger generations

Dunno mate...this one is marching us into right wing techno authoritarianism when they were supposed to be the green tech generation immune to online bullshit.

I want to believe in them too but young men specifically are pretty fucking disappointing right now and get angry at the idea that we're disappointed in them

Not all of them.

Im Gen X and when I was in my teens and 20's my generation wasn't even noticed enough by the boomers for them to have an opinion about us. They had, and still have, their heads up their own asses and when I was in my teens and 20's they were still dominant in all aspects of life. Gen X was no threat to Boomers because they outnumbered us by about 3 to 1.

And my parents generation was the so-called "silent" generation, born between the "greatest" WW2 generation and the boomers. Like Gen X, their cohort wasn't big enough to matter either and, also like Gen X, they were overshadowed by the proceeding and subsequent generational cohorts.

Gen Zers aren't victims of bad press from boomers. They're simply awful. It's not all their own fault, of course. They were raised by smartphones and are inheriting a world that is basically been rendered a non-stop shit show in a dumpster fire. They simply dont have the life skills necessary to navigate their way through life. But they also have no desire to be or do anything unless success comes right away and without breaking a sweat.

Gen X was the first to question the need to work like slaves for someone else. Gen Z doesn't even care about working for themselves.

It is important to be fair to them though. They've been given a shit sandwich to deal with by preceding generations. They didn't invent social media, smart phones, vulture capitalism, economic enshittification, the housing crisis, etc and they've been forced to just deal with it from a position of complete weakness by virtue of when they were born. It shouldn't surprise anyone that they're going to broadly struggle with a lot of it. But when viewed as a group they sure seem to fall victim to the worst of our human impulses at least as bad as any generation before them in response to those problems and unless they track way differently than previous generations, they're only going to swing further socially right wing from here as they get older.

If I remember correctly from this boards carefully curated twitter feed, didn’t Zohran get a huge, historic young voter turnout after the NYC youth vote swung toward Trump in 2024? Am I remembering that right?

Which doesn’t make voting for Trump any less fucking stupid, but maybe they’re just the generation of “we’ll vote for literally anything other than the shitty status quo we’ve been given”

yup. seems like a strong ant-incumbency movement. and based on the hand they've been dealt, at least that part is logical.

Spot on, with the bolded part emphasizing the root of the concern. They seem willing to flop around wherever they need to be idealogically if someone will speak to their concerns of affordability.
