OT: The Official Toronto Raptors Thread

13 dubs in a row. Bucks have the longest streak this year at 18.

I’m pretty sure I heard this is the longest winning streak in Toronto sports history.

It’s also the longest winning streak in Canadian NHL/NBA/MLB history. The Habs had the previous record at 12.

Oh no! Most Hab fans, including myself, had “12 wins a row!!!!!!!!!!!!” banners hanging in our living rooms. Will leave a profound empty space in our hearts as well.

In fairness, like most Habs achievements, the banner would have long ago died on the vine and fallen from the rafters on it's own. So even had you put a banner up, it wouldn't be there in 2020 anyway.

How did no one draft or sign this guy Terence Davis? He ain't Jimmy Butler yet, but man, he is starting to resemble Jimmy. In more ways than one.

Crazy ass acquisition. Nuts.

And Ibaka and Norman Powell, what the heck is happening?

Is there some coaching genius in the background, I mean Powell was the laughing stock of the Raptors on this board, just about a year ago.

Mindz? Need your "athletic" opinion here. Or Zeke?

Told teams he wasn't signing a 2 way contract and nobody wanted to go in on him with a 1st round (guaranteed contract) pick. He had about a dozen teams interested in taking him in the 2nd round. As for why nobody wanted to take him with a 1st, that's a harder question to answer but if I was taking a stab at it

- 4th year NCAA player. NBA teams tend to assign more value to younger players who come out earlier.
- He didn't appear to progress much statistically over the final 3 years of college (including a pretty brutal sophomore season)
- He didn't play for a powerhouse program (6th in the SEC in his final year) so didn't get the visibility that someone playing for Duke, Kentucky, etc would get
- Is the classic "good at everything, great at nothing" kind of prospect. Good athlete but doesn't jump out of the gym or wow you with athleticism, decent size but doesn't have freakish wingspan or a similar stand out physical tool, good defender but isn't a lockdown guy, was a good shooter in college but not elite, etc, etc.

As usual, a brilliant appraisal. . But have to say, he looks pretty great to me right about now. How about you? What do you think of him?

I read a bunch of teams offered Davis guaranteed money after he was lights out during his first Summer league game. I guess the scouts needed to see him vs his peers to believe. Not 100% sure why Davis chose the Raptors, but their track record developing Van Fleet, (and to a lesser extent Siakam and Powell) probably played a large role.

I like him a lot though I'm not sure where his ultimate upside is. What made Butler so good is a similar skills toolkit to what Davis has, but in a 6'7 230 pound body. Jimmy developed into a beast partially due to his ability to get into the paint and get calls. Davis' ability to shoot this well at the NBA level has surprised me (he was a good, but not great college shooter and adapting to the longer 3 pt line can be a challenge for non elite college shooters) but he's going to need to add a couple more tools/skills to develop into more than a good #3 scoring option (on a good team).

His floor, imo is a more mature version of what he is now. An above average 3&D combo guard (a "combo" guard being someone with a mixture of skills from both the PG and SG position) who can run the break, plus rebounder for a guard, function as a primary ball handler for a second unit. Ceiling, I'm honestly not sure. Maybe Jimmy, but Jimmy is a lot bigger than TD is.

Defending champions plus their track record in developing talent, yeah. I remember seeing some early season interviews where he nibbled around the outside of it explaining it.

Anyway, imagine Toronto beating out other teams for talent. It goes to show what winning and culture can do, even with cold weather and bilingual packaging.

Winning, money, weather

Those are the 3 things players tend to look for, and the order is different for each player.
