OT: The Official Toronto Raptors Thread

smallball ftw

Is it smallball when their best player is 7'5? The size part of "smallball" is secondary. The ball part is non negotiable.

The takeaway is skill. That was the takeaway from OKC. It's the takeaway from SAS, It's the takeaway from New York. Shooting and ball skills up and down the roster.

welcome to the darkside, my friend.

size is a bonus, not a necessity. big men who can't dribble and shoot are a liability over time.

The shit that real size does is still another non negotiable part of the game. SAS just has a 7'5 freak doing it. Your dislike of the Zesty King in NYC is well known, but 17/11/6 with outrageous advanced metrics is a huge reason they've made the finals. Someone has to do that work.

imo what is dead is that whole "everyone is going to be a 6'8 wing" thing that caused a bunch of teams (including us) to prioritize a bunch of long wings with no skill. There's almost none of those guys on any of these good teams. OKC's rotation is two bigs and guards, SAS' is two bigs and guards, Knicks are two bigs, OG and guards, Cavs two bigs and guards. The mythical "3&D Wing" is dead as a premium player type.

Im rooting for the knicks

Mostly for this guy

But also for the Zesty King. Dude has a better story than most people are aware. Lost 8 family members including his mother to covid, has been open about his struggles with mental health over that and his father's illnesses. Seems like a good dude overall.

Also, rooting against the ghost of Thibs.

All sorts of reasons to pull for the Knicks here. It's not that SAS is unlikeable, it's that we all better hope they're not really this good this soon. I went over a bunch of reasons last year that I didn't think OKC was necessarily a pending dominant dynasty. But I don't think I would have much to go on if the Spurs are already the best team in the league now with Wemby and the entire important part of the core was 20-25 yrs old and the secondary stars still nowhere near their peak. Shit, they can probably afford to keep everyone together for at least 5-6 years if they just move off of Fox, which honestly wouldn't even be hard in this new era of teams having to actually try to not really suck.
