This sort of removes any potential of the one thing that would block the trade: Kawhi's contract being voided. Though it sounds like a suspension for him isn't ruled out by any means. I guess this means we'll continue to wait?
The substance of this is very believable and true. I can confirm from personal experience that it does definitely work just like that. The contracts themselves with the sponsors will say that, as part of the deal, the personal services company ("loanout") for the celebrity or the company that the celebrity is associated with (think Mint Mobile and Ryan Reynolds) will produce the celebrity for certain deliverables. But then the sponsor needs to negotiate with the celebrity individually for everything.
So, is there a problem with introducing the player to the brands? Unless there's something in the NBA rules, it wouldn't be.
The real issue keeps coming down to whether Ballmer found a way to put money in the hands of the companies Kawhi did deals with that would eventually find its way into his hands. That jumbotron company seems like where the smoking gun must be, but if they can't figure it out, then there's nothing really left to talk about.
It's obviously coincidental that the amounts of money that found their way to Kawhi through these channels always equalled the money he was losing out on by signing with the Clippers in the first place. But as I mentioned a few weeks ago, without a smoking gun you've got nothing. This isn't a matter of what we know. We know these motherfuckers did this shit. But it can't be proven.
He's Howard Berger. But instead of spending his money chasing the team around on his own dime, he spent all of his money on that sweet vinyl floor behind him.
