OT: The Official Toronto Raptors Thread

I mean, the people who wanted to run that core back and pay them all keep forgetting some stuff. Fred was trying to shoot 20 times a night to get his bag. OG was complaining about not getting touches (because he wanted his bag). Pascal wasn't happy that Masai wasn't throwing max money at him and while this was all going on, Nick Nurse was done with the whole fucking thing.

It was a core group that all wanted to get paid and stopped doing all the raptors culture shit that got us to multiple ECF's and a title. I can imagine that it wasn't fun watching Fred & Gary hoist up shots trying to get their bread.

I think Mitch Marner has a Durant poster in his nursery

KD didn't have a no trade clause though, he couldn't actually block the trades so this is kind of made up.

What's likely is that KD told potential destination teams that he wasn't interested in resigning with them, so they pulled their offers. Which he had been clear from the beginning of this, he was only willing to extend with one of his preferred destinations.

This is just the Suns front office crying that KD wouldn't extend in Minnesota, who allegedly had the highest potential offer for him.

A few other random things from today

- As expected, Hali has a torn achilles. Surgery early next week.
- Miami's offer for KD was apparently hilarious. It was allegedly "none of the players Phoenix wanted" and a single 1st rd pick. So if I had to guess, I'm going to say Rozier + Robinson + stuff to salary match. No Ware, no Jovic, both of whom Phoenix wanted.
- Tolzman on a podcast earlier today saying that the front office thinks this draft is deeper than last year's, especially at where they're selecting and that a large amount of teams have reached out about trying to get the 9
- Givony dropped his new mock today, Ace Bailey has dropped to 6th. Tre Johnson to 7th (trade up pls). Has Essengue to us at the 9.

Bingo , that core was toast and not paying luxury bills for .500 team at best going nowhere

Suns simply put...fucked up royally getting him and trying a 3 headed monster that couldnt defend a statue and no depth

The main criticism I agree with overall is that we waited too long to detonate it and overall did a pretty meh job at getting value for some of the pieces we moved on from. Probably should have just invested in Norm and traded him later rather than take Gary as his value. S&T's are always tough, but Precious turned out to not be anything close to what Masai thought he was, walking Fred to free agency instead of trading him when he turned down his extension the summer before, almost doing the same thing with Pascal.

It's the main problem with these trades to get an elite player while giving up fucking everything to get him. You trade away all of your depth, and all of your draft equity to get them. So you're left with an elite player surrounded by not nearly enough to win with.

19-20: Kyle 33, FVV 25, OG 22, Siakam 25, Gasol 35 (Norm 26, Ibaka 30, TDII 22) - #2 53-19, 2nd round

Masai did nothing to replace Kawhi. Hoped that OG would be enough (and stupidly thought "athletes" like Stanley and Rondae were worth looking at). Still a good team but obviously not nearly as good.

20-21: Kyle 34, FVV 26, OG 23, Siakam 26, Baynes 34 (Norm 27, Boucher 28, Flynn 22) - #12 27-45, no playoffs

Masai tried to replace Gasol with Baynes, which was a disaster. More importantly, the big 4 there all missed between 25-40 games, which sealed their fate. Norm traded for Gary at deadline, Kyle dumped for ass (Precious and Dragic). Just a disaster year all around. Luckily they drafted Scottie because of it.

21-22: FVV 27, Gary 23, Scottie 20, OG 24, Siakam 27 (Precious 22, Boucher 29, Birch 29) - #5 48-34, lost 1st round in 6 to 4th place PHIm with both FVV and Scottie injured.

Solid year considering aside from the new Big 4, the rest of the team was absolute ass. Those 4 carried them to a decent record despite gary and the bench being black holes. Something to build on, if Masai actually tried to add good players.

22-23: FVV 28, Gary 24, Scottie 21, OG 25, Siakam 28 (Previous 23, Boucher 30, Koloko 22) - #9 41-41, no playoffs

This year was the big disappointment. Big step back. Masai still failed to give the big 4 any depth whatsoever. Nurse sucked. The vets grated at Scottie getting special treatment. Masai tries to add Poeltl at the deadline in desperation. Fred leaves as a free agent.

23-24: Schroeder 30, Scottie 22, OG 26, Siakam 29, Poeltl 28 (Gary 25, Olynyk 32, Dick 20) - #12 25-57, no playoffs

Well poisoned. Everybody injured right from the start. OG traded away early (for a solid return). Pascal traded at the deadline for ass. Gary thankfully not re-signed.

24-25: IQ 25, Dick 21, RJ 24, Scottie 23, Poeltl 29 (Agbaji 24, Davion 26, Jakobe 20) - #11, 30-52, no playoffs

Deliberate tank year. Everybody injured or faking injury all year. Even then the depth was shit. rewarded with a #9 pick.

Masai just let that team fall apart piece by piece, never even coming close to getting adequate replacements for any piece that left, or ever giving the team any useful depth.

The only major thing I'd say to that is there is no replacing Kawhi, and the plan was to audition Pascal as batman and he kind of flopped in the audition, especially in the playoffs where he was fucking brutal. Had he been even just okay in the playoffs we probably make the finals again.

But I agree that Masai was way too patient with a lot of things during that era. Both with the closing of the championship window, and then with the young core that was left when the veterans moved on.

I agree. Masai is/was loyal to a fault. And because of that he is not as aggressive as he should be.

He really, really wanted to win with Demar.

But once he comes around to a rebuild (way 2 late), that is where he makes his money.
