OT: The Official Toronto Raptors Thread

Random updates:

- Shai signs for 4/285
- Valanciunas traded to the nuggets...that's a nice backup for Jokic. 1-1 for Saric, which is lol. A tank move imo.
- Yabusele signs with the Knicks 2/12
- Bucks are trading Connaughton to Charlotte for Micic
- Miami is interested in Dame when he has 2 legs again
- Gary Harris signs a 2 yr with the Bucks

I think there was an assumption that every time we signed a player it was because they came because of Masai and his cache, I just meant that might be overstated.

Jake wasn't turning down what we offered him. Pretty significant overpay imo. Would be easier arguing that was a "no masai tax" than anything else.

Now all they need to do is see if there is an upgrade to RJ out there and they are golden (and maybe some vet bench scoring)

if there is an upgrade to RJ out there

There isn't. Grange was saying today that we were in on both Bane and White and were offering RJ + 9 + stuff but bailed out when the prices got dumb. Those were the upgrades out there on the market.

The thing about SG is that it's not remotely as deep a position as it used to be. RJ is a top ~15 off ball guard offensively already, even in his less than efficient state. There are a few guys out there in the same range but maybe/probably better than him like Monk, Lavine, or Simons. But they come with their own issues (Monk is smaller and as meh defensively, Simons is way worse defensively, and Lavine is way more expensive)

It's better to just sit back, let the new financial reality of the league set in (GM's aren't giving away big money like it's free anymore...kind of a shame we couldn't get IQ and Ingram signed under this new level of understanding and saved a couple of million) and then see what happens during the season. It's not a crazy idea that RJ could be extended next summer at a very reasonable number (if Turner only goes for 4/100 as the top FA available this summer, I can't see RJ's number being even that high. Also not crazy to think that he might tighten up some of his deficiencies and get a bit better going forward as well. I don't see him having a huge ceiling or anything, but efficiency can be as simple as changing your shot diet and buying into a defensive system a bit better.

If Walter or Dick take big steps forward, maybe you consider moving off of him regardless for the cap flexibility. But I don't want to do anything sideways just to do it. Though I wish we'd go into the tax to add another legit bench player if this is supposed to be a competitive year.

foolish to trade anyone now tbh.

they're all at their lowest value.

Play this starting 5 together and healthy and they will all look much better individually. All of them will have better trade value as the year goes on.

And anyway RJ only has 1yr left on his deal after this, and has been a positive impact player since being a raptor and is only 25 this year. His value could legit skyrocket by the end of the year if he ticks up the efficiency in a more complementary role.

C: Jake - Mamu
PF: Scottie - CMB - Mogbo
SF: Ingram - Dick
SG: RJ - Walter - Okai
PG: IQ - Shead

Mamu 8'10.5" standing reach, 240lbs (and an outside shooter)
CMB 8'10.0" standing reach, 240lbs
Mogbo 9'0.5" standing reach, 225lbs

I'm thinking CMB and Mogbo both get more minutes than Mamu tbh. Agbaji too.

If CMB plays at 240 this year, be disappointed, that's 10lb bigger than he should be playing at in the NBA.

The biggest defensive knock on him was how he handled bigger/stronger players in the post, I don't think dropping him into the deep end against NBA C's is the way to go especially when his future NBA position is more 4/3 depending on where his shot ends up as a skill.

I'd be pretty surprised if either of the kids were better than Mamu so I guess it depends on if we're doing the Boucher thing to Mamu or not. If it's minutes on merit, Mamu should probably be around 15a night depending on matchups. Jake his customary 26-29 and then the rest small ball whatever.

Basically, I don't think this is a "development" year for the team, and I don't think Darko is going to be given the green light to suck again. If that's the case, Mamu (and Okai) are likely to be top of the bench rotation short of Mogbo taking a big step forward and CMB being way more NBA playable immediately than most 9 spot picks.

Most likely scenario for the bench imo is going to be one of Mogbo or CMB getting most of those minutes at the 4 spot, and Mamu being a secondary offensive guy to Dick/Walter

If this is the team and is healthy i see the ceiling as 6th in East, maybe stun the 3 seed with the floor one and done play in team?

If Ingram/Quickley are made of glass and Scottie misses time? lottery again but not serious enough to tank.

The depth is terrible, and im not convinced any of the kids take leaps

I was loud about the bench being terrible heading into last season, because we were relying on proven crap like Mitchell Brown and actually needed bench guys like Dick/Agbaji to be in the starting lineup. The only think i liked on the bench was Olynyk/Boucher, though was sure Boosh wouldn't play.

But this year I'm much more optimistic about the bench. These are a bunch of young lottery picks as the first wave off the bench - all the way through a 9 man rotation.
