OT: The Official Toronto Raptors Thread

My question is, would that trade significantly increase their upside? Would they be a solidly top 3-4 team, or better, if they do it? If yes, what do we care about gay ass draft picks? Go balls to the wall, I'm not sure there are many other avenues to upgrade their roster during the immediate Kawhi window.

It's hard to say because of a few factors. How fucked is Jake's back? If he's just straight up diminished going forward and this is known inside the organization, it changes my opinion here. Healthy Jake is a pretty functional mid tier starting C who rebounds and rim protects well, both skills that we need. Assuming that he's not damaged goods though, I think Sabonis increases their upside but not massively. He would definitely help improve the half court offence and I'm of the opinion that he's a better stretch option than people give him credit for. But he's not a rim protector, so would lower the upside on the defensive end (would still be an elite defensive team regardless imo).

The math for me is this: If this was just a simple Jake for Sabonis swap, yeah I attach a pick no problem. But the salaries don't work so we would have to include RJ, who despite his flaws is a perfectly useful starting SG. Sabonis wants out and there's no market for him. He's coming off of a knee surgery and has 92 million guaranteed over the next 2 seasons to be a fringe star player (analytics darling though, tbf).

Including IQ is a non starter for me. IQ is another guy who borders on analytics darling status and if we move him, it's for value in a trade for a guard upgrade.

Ballsy though. Based on what we know now and Bobby couldn't have possibly known at the time, had Ballmer not been a billionaire about it all and played ball with the front office, Kawhi would likely have been made an example of. It sounds like they approached Ballmer first, and went to Kawhi only after Ballmer was difficult about it all. I don't think their preference here was to reward Kawhi and punish Ballmer.

There appears to have been a very real possibility that Kawhi could have ended up with his contract voided and a significant suspension. How big of a fucking disaster would that have been for us, to make the trade only to have the contract voided and Kawhi eat a 1 yr?
 
Honestly, the fairest thing here would be for the league to void Kawhi's contract right now and make him a free agent.

That's what LA deserves. Why should they get any trade capital back for him? Fuck them, especially if they're trying out some new antics now after the ruling.

Think of it in terms of a criminal investigation. If neither guy talks, you probably lose the case. The good deal goes to the guy who flips. In this case, that's Kawhi. He gets the last year of the big contract and remains extension eligible. Probably talking about a 100+ million dollar difference I career earnings vs having the contract voided.
