OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

He may really want Price but still not be able to get him, even armed with a 7-yr, $200M offer. Speculation has always been that Chicago and L.A. are the frontrunners.

He may allocate that money to 2 FA starters, like a Zimmermann plus somebody else. It may not be the worst decision, either. All we can do now is wait and see. It is good to see LaCava heavily involved here, I wouldn't mind him getting the full-time gig.

Price is gone. I think they will replace Estrada will a mid level FA and fill rest of roles from within.

Stroman
FA
Dickey
Hutchinson
Sanchez/Osuna

And this is not remotely good enough.

That is far too much pressure on Stroman.

Obviously alot depends who that FA actually is.

What i think we need to see at minimum

Stroman
FA
FA
Dickey
Hutchison/Sanchez/Walk On

Frankly if the Jays still see Sanchez as a starter long term, he should start the year in Buffalo and hone his craft, working to develop a 3rd pitch.

He offers nothing to me as a middling 5 in 2016, and while he's a decent arm out of the pen, he was overvalued by Gibby. I'd rather see a core of Osuna, Hendriks, Cecil, Loup a FA or 2 that throw smoke and potentially Hutchison, who i think could replace Hendriks as the long man and develop into an interesting RP.

What i hope Shapiro does is identifies the one SP he wants, flat out wants, and gets him. Ideally a Zimmermann, Iwakuma, Gallardo, Samardzija or Kazmir. Lock that guy up as the number 2 SP.

Then address the pen, either through free agency or trade ( Revere for a team's soon to be expensiveish lights out set up man, makes sense)

Lastly come January when the first and second wave of FA's are done, and there are still some FA SP who missed the boat on a deal, lowball them or get them on a 1 year deal and let whoever that is become the 4, and have a competition for the 5 slot.

The question is, do the Jays have 40 mill to spend? That's what they will need to get 2 arms (if they don't sign Price) plus fill out bullpen and rest of roster.

Does anyone trust Gibbons with either a)selection of the bullpen or b)bullpen usage

I have no problem with this strategy.

My fear is that Shapiro balks at the asking of 14-18M on a 3-5 year deal for the bulk of those guys and misses on all of them.

He needs to find the one guy he likes the most, and gets him

His track record of Kluber, Carrasco, Bauer and Salazar makes me think he'll do a good job at identifying which one to target.

Nope. I agree that Sanchez needs to develop that third plus pitch. The fastball is plus and the curveball flashes even better at times. Needs a changeup or cutter or something to get thru a lineup 2-3 times. Put him in Buffalo and leave him alone for a few months and see what happens.

Yikes...I sincerely hope that we haven't just experienced the high water mark for this decade. But with Fire Marshall Bill at the helm, I have 0 confidence.

This guy is a master at weasel-speak. To paraphrase: "Oh yeah, the resources will be there...in terms of infrastructure, support for our players, development...and, if you have to I guess, maybe as a last resort you sign a free agent."

I see this attitude towards Shapiro from many of you guys. How can you say this and love Beeston at the same time? AA and Beeston were masters of Rogers talk. In the same interview they would try to convince you that Rogers is all out to win...and that there are payroll parameters.

No Buerhle saves 18 million
No Price (prorated for 2 months) saves about 10 million
Tulo is actually cheaper than Ryes was by about 2 million.

thats 30 million right there.

Anyone else concerned about giving Price a long, expensive contract? He was good at times in the playoffs, but was far from convincing.

Jays need to get to the playoffs before worrying about the playoffs. Price helps you get there.

I'm okay with signing 2 - 15 million guys instead, but Price would still be #1 for me.

I think pretty much everyone is concerned about signing Price, considering it will likely take 7 years and $200 million +.

There's no doubt it's potentially a great move, but also risky as hell.

it kills me that this guy keeps going on about the farm system, given the position of the current team it should only be a concern come time of the draft and furthermore given his less then stellar draft record in Cleveland who the **** is he to criticize

Yeah. Generally I don't care about latter years of contracts, especially when those years the team will likely be rebuilding (that's why I hated the 5-year rule). However, I too have a limitation on that in that the team has to be in the position to win during part of that contract, and that the player has to be a significant contributor to the team winning. As Onetwothree pointed out, Price clearly contributes to the Jays getting into the playoffs for the next few years, however, my concern is that he may not be the guy to get us over the hump and win us a World Series.

At the end of the day though, it's David freakin' Price. If he accepts a contract here, I'd give it to him. Upside of him getting over his playoffs troubles is too much for me to just ignore, but I am also worried at the same time.
