OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Interestingly enough, Baseball America had Anthony Kay listed as a Top 100 prospect as recently as June according to this article (he slotted in at #91). He's been scuffling in AAA and dropped out of their list in the July update.

In their June update of their Top 100 prospect rankings, Kay is now ranked the 91st best prospect in the game. Baseball America gives high 60 ratings to his fastball and change-up while giving him a 50 overall ranking. Overall, Baseball America noted:

In his second full season, Kay has continued to show why the Mets spent their first-round pick on him in 2016. He’s carved hitters with a three-pitch mix and excellent command of his repertoire. His changeup and fastball each project as plus, and his slider should be at least an average offering.

i'm not buying that on Kay. that sounds like new york helium to me.

Kay '18 (23, A/A+): 122.2ip, 23.2k%, 9.2b%, 4.26era, 3.60fip, 3.93xfip
Kay '19 (24, AA/AAA): 97.2ip, 23.9k%, 8.5b%, 3.13era, 3.85fip, 4.36xfip
All MILB (24, A-AAA): 220.1ip, 23.5k%, 8.9b%, 3.76era, 3.71fip, 4.12xfip

I don't hold the bad AAA performance against him any more than I give him credit for the good AA performance. I see them as just small sample variations, really.

Overall, he's just a guy with no great pitches who's been old for every level and put up mediocre numbers across the board.

That's a New York link, but they were just reporting where Baseball America had him on their list in June. And the paragraph starting with "In his second full season..." was them quoting the BA article.

Fangraphs updated Blue Jays Top 10 Prospects:

1. Bo Bichette
2. Nate Pearson
3. Jordan Groshans
4. Alek Manoah
5. Simeon Woods Richardson
6. Anthony Kay
7. Sean Reid-Foley
8. Adam Kloffenstein
9. Eric Pardinho
10. Gabriel Moreno

yeah i was suggesting that even the scouting sites are tainted by NY bias sometimes. sounds like 3 ok pitches with middling to poor results while old for the level. they're projecting some plus from a couple pitches but I don't like the sounds of projecting on a 24yr old.

interesting to compare him to fellow 2016 1st rounder Zeuch, who also went through injury. Zeuch's 4 and a half months younger.

MILB

Zeuch: 297.1ip, 17.5k%, 7.0bb%, ~60gb%, 3.63era, 3.87fip, ~3.70xfip
Kay: 220.1ip, 23.5k%, 8.9bb%, ~38gb%, 3.76era, 3.71fip, 4.12xfip

SWR makes sense to me there. I think they're too low on our undrafted kids like Pardinho and Moreno at the same level though.

Kay and SRF are both too high for me....but it's funny looking at their pitch ratings for both these guys, and see them still slotting Kay ahead.

It's not easy to rank guys with varying skill levels and experience all in different levels on one list.

There is a certain value to lower upside guys you expect to make the majors soon (like SRF, Kay, Borucki, etc.) when compared to guys with theoretical higher upside but are years away and may never get to the majors. Always a balancing act of many different factors.

Still, a few rival evaluators offered assessments that were less sunny.

“I thought they would have gotten more, to be honest, but who knows?” said one.

Another saw Kay pitch this year and “wasn’t all that impressed … decent arm but not exactly a frontline prospect that gets you excited.”

A third suggested the Mets had the pair as back-end starters, which isn’t nothing, as the current void the Blue Jays are facing shows, but is less than what some might have imagined in return for Stroman.

It bothers me that these guys appear to be narrow visioned to get arms in return. Im certain they bypassed better OF prospects like Frazier or Tucker which tells me they think their lot of McKinney, Teoscar, Grichuk, Drury and Alford are good enough

No way of knowing whether those guys were ever offered for Stroman. Frazier's probably available, but I'm not interested in a head-case outfielder who can't field. Will be interesting if they trade Tucker or not.

Gurriel in left, Grichuk in right is solid enough. Definitely need a center fielder. With an eye on upgrading in RF when possible. Would have loved one of the ATL guys but it doesn't sound like they're available. Maybe for a guy like Thor.

Probably all 4th outfielders. Though Grichuk does have a lot of power. We may eventually have to move Biggio to the OF as well, scouts are divided on his defense long-term.

Its hard to have a successful rebuild when you don't get any value for the good players on the roster. Ultimately getting one decent 18 year old pitcher for Donaldson, EE, Stroman, Sanchez, Osuna, Happ, Estrada etc. is going to be very hard to overcome.

They simply were not aggressive enough, early enough if they were going to rebuild Which is what a lot of us said at the time. Pick a plan. But they didn't and let the core of an elite team vanish for almost nothing.
