OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Obviously we have no idea what goes on behind closed doors. But the reports I've seen said the Red Sox have repeatedly tried to discuss a long-term deal with Betts, but he's adamant on testing free agency.

I mean, if he is willing to sign for market value (even without a hometown discount) they probably should do that. Can't make him sign, though. Same with Lindor in Cleveland.

He wants money.

He doesn't want to leave.

They just traded their best player for scraps. That's hilarious. That's shapiroesque.

I don't disagree with you, Verdugo is underwhelming, Graterol's a pretty good prospect but I'm assuming they would get more from L.A.

If this is all there is, it's a shitty return and shipping Price out suggests they were more interested in saving money than anything else. The option is there to start the season and trade Betts at the deadline if the Dodgers aren't giving them more than what's been reported so far.

But I have heard several times he wants to test free agency and won't sign an extension before then. Red Sox fans will definitely go nuts if he proceeds to sign an extension with the Dodgers.

The Dodgers have THREE high-end catching prospects. Though Will Smith's not really a prospect anymore, he came up last year and had a great debut. But even if he doesn't work out, they've still got Diaz and Cartaya. I just don't understand how the Red Sox couldn't have at least gotten one of those guys (or at least a couple of good prospects). I know he's under contract for only one year, but unless there's more to the deal, the Dodgers got Mookie Betts for Alex Verdugo (decent upside) and Kenta Maeda (who they don't need cause they have like 8 possible starters).

A pure salary dump . Sox window is over and still have plenty of dumb money on that roster

They are paying 1/2 of Price`s contract but wanted him gone

Yanks are smiling

Was Pederson a CF option for us ???

Pretty surprised the Sox moved Betts at all actually. That seemed like opposing team fan fiction earlier in the offseason.

The only way it really makes sense is if they are sure they aren’t going to re-sign him, or if they are going to go after him hard in the offseason. He wasn’t signing early anyway... so they move him one year early, get a serviceable OF and a pitching prospect back and manage to squeeze under the luxury tax limit. If you squint at it, that kind of makes some sense. If Betts is intent on going to the highest bidder next year, then all they’re losing is one year. They either overpay by the most and get him back or they don’t, in which case he was gone anyway.

It does seem like a Shapiro-esque move though. Move a guy now rather than losing him for nothing or having to pay him; meanwhile the team gets appreciably worse.

Joc hasn't really been a CF for a few years now. Nice platoon bat, but strictly a corner OF nowadays.

Officials involved in the three-team Mookie Betts blockbuster remain confident the deal will be completed, but perhaps not in its original reported form.

The Red Sox, after viewing the medical records of Twins right-hander Brusdar Graterol, projected him more as a reliever than as a starter, according to sources involved with the discussions. As a result of that valuation, the Sox might ask for an additional player and/or money to bridge the gap, though it is unclear whether the player would come from the Twins or Dodgers, sources said.

Sounds like something a random name generator that just smashed names from different cultures together would come up with.

Or something from East/West bowl

Funny thing is a lot of prospect hounds have been saying he projects as a (potentially elite) relief pitcher for a while now. Red Sox just figured that out after trading for him.
