OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

There was a time (several times in franchise history) when the Jays would be the most likely team to pull off the big moves.

Lol you guys.

Bryant could be a Donaldson level acquisition. Would need to be resigned of course. That would write the wrong when AA didn’t sign him after the 2010 draft.

bryant makes more sense for a long term commitment than lindor given that bichette fashions himself a SS.

but i have 0% faith that they are going to close this.

Bryant would be curious since he has experience in the corner OF, you could still potentially give Vlad time at 3B. Or if you picked up Bryant and like a Wong or Simmons you have more flexibility.

You know Bryant had no intention of signing, right? That’s why he lasted until the 18th round. He was a first round talent, even out of high school. AA took a flyer because he has balls, but there was never a deal to be had.

I like Bryant, but Lindor is the better long-term bet. And the acquisition cost for Lindor was surprisingly low.

Hendriks makes it worth the risk that Bryant walks after this year, IMO.

Bryant went on record and said they never got to him. Not sure if that means they didn’t offer a contract or if they never got to negotiate. Either way a miss.
"I feel [the Blue Jays] had other priorities in terms of other guys they picked and trying to get those people signed, and then they work on guys who are tougher signs later on," Bryant said. "I guess they just never got to me. It was way different the second time [I was drafted in 2013], obviously. I knew where I was going to be picked, I'd performed really well.

not throwing shade at AA. With hindsight obviously a miss. You won’t get a deal done if you never offer one. Likely wouldn’t have gotten him regardless.

and the Lindor acquisition cost was most certainly not “low”. Mets gave up a bunch of good pieces that I outlined in an earlier post.

Hendricks would be an awesome acquisition.

Fair enough. Bryant isn't wrong about the Jays having other guys, in 2010 they went way over slot to sign their 5th round pick, Dickie Joe Thon. They gave Thon first round money ($1.5M)

In retrospect, take the $2M they gave their highest pick, Deck McGuire, and the $1.5M they gave Thon and maybe they could have signed Bryant. Bryant went to college, went #2 overall in 2013 and got $6.7M from the Cubs. Good on the surface, but the Cubs shenanigans to keep Bryant in the minors and get an extra year of control cost him many more millions.

Well, he signed for like the 3rd or 4th richest RP contract in league history, so that might have something to do with it.
