OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

I saw Palmegiani play a bunch in Vancouver last summer and was not really a fan. The vibe he gives off is a less talented Brett Lawrie. Similar build, also very athletic, quite a bit more swing and miss.

Palmegiani is Canadian like Lawrie too, so probably pretty raw and it’s certainly possible he has turned a corner. I know he did well in AFL and in very limited time in AAA, but considering how not good he was in A-ball a year ago, I’m going to say he needs some more seasoning.

it's not like our top10 is stcaked.

I think it's a great move, love Severino and think he figures it out. And if he does, he's a 2-3.
He has 2 major red flags.

Being injury prone and being shit.

Sure it could work out and if it does, it looks great. I just feel like the cost for these prove it deals has gone up, hell NYM didnt even get a team option out of this.

It’s terrible. Tiedemann is legit and after that it’s a bunch of guys that are lacking multiple tools or even long shots.

The guys they’ve traded away haven’t amounted to much either (other than Moreno). This admin is not good at building a system.

Didn't listen much to radio broadcasts recently, but I thought Ben Wagner did a pretty good job. I'm annoyed by this cause he seems like a good dude, but we'll have to wait and see who they replace him with.

Rumor is Ben Shulman is getting the radio gig? Dan Shulmans kid.

This offseason has me nervous. If they trade Bo and/or Vlad I might give up baseball until Roger’s is out. So forever.

Kikuchi made the All-Star team in his last season in Seattle then fell apart the second half.

Severino looked like he forgot how to pitch for the entire season and has a really bad injury history.

Super duper meh. He was a horrible 30 yr old starting pitcher who ran hot for 10 starts and then cratered in his UFA year and we threw 3/36 at him. Severino's 2022 would be the best performance of Kikuchi's life. I don't see a good argument anywhere to suggest that Kikuchi was anything but a small sample size "we can change him" project.

and fwiw, the Kikuchi play has worked okay so far. Classic Shatkins, to spend 26 million on 1.9 WAR over 2 years, but fine. Severino though, there's some real upside on signing (again, his 2022 form was outstanding, health is the obvious issue) but that's the point of signing a guy for 1 yr though. That's how you actually find the sweet spot of shared risk.

I dont think they are comparable situations.

Not directly, because they're risky for different reasons. Severino is risky because as noted, he sucked last year and his arm appears to randomly fall off. Kikuchi was risky because at 30 yrs old he had been a career tire fire to that point, and they gave him 3 years. Both were projects for the #5 slot, but you can definitely see the difference in actual risk tolerance and upside.

I don't see them as particularly comparable, I think Severino was only going to take a 1-year "prove it" deal. Injury prone sure, but the talent is there and he could get 5/100 (or more) if he rebounds.
