Nickel and dime Vlad on short term deals for as long as they possibly could, using every CBA tool at their disposal. Then when he's on the cusp of free agency, give him an offer that's low enough that they know Vlad will reject it and they won't have to pay him, but high enough that the front office and ownership can turn to the public, shrug their shoulders and say "oh well, we tried!"

They've given Vladdy no reason to be loyal, and they've helped drive the market insanity that makes it stupid for him to not test free agency. Vladdy isn't getting 700 millie, but if he's a 26 yr old free agent coming off of back to back elite offensive seasons someone is throwing 10/12 x ~40 at him. The time to lock him up in the 300's was after his 22 yr old season before they started fucking with his swing.
