OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

2 things:

  • This was an Ed Rogers Special (Shi reported that Ownership had direct meetings with Vlad)
  • If it was up to Shatkins, Vlad doesn't sign this deal

lol this makes me dislike shapkins even more. I usually blame Rogers for most of what they do, but this one is completely on them...

Vlad’s #1 BBreference comparable is Eddie Murray. Number 3 is Prince Fielder. I think that represents pretty well the wide range of outcomes and whether this deal is going to work out or be a bust.

But for now I’m don’t care, and I expect we’ll get at least 5 years of good value out of this.

So hire new management and build a good team now.

Ed Rogers was already part of the negotiations for the last couple of months. From what I understand, they were already up to $500 with deferrals (or very close to it) before Spring Training.

Closer to bust , 5 good years on a 14 year deal ....nice

just accept that the last 2-3 years are probably going to be shit, but that they enable the yearly AAV to be less over the entire deal.

Potential is there for Vladdy to be elite for 7ish years, then still very good for a few more. Think of it as 10/500, but at 37.5 per year opens up 12.5m to spend on other players every season.

I would've preferred it was in the 400-450 range, but at least we got the deal done.

Prince Fielder is an interesting comparison, but not for why Vlad detractors want to think. Fielder was 40+ pounds heavier than Vlad while being shorter and remained a fringe elite hitter through his late 20's despite that. In the end his career was cut short because of a neck injury that probably came about from him not at all taking care of himself coupled with a physically violent swing. He's the cautionary tale of what Vlad could have been had he never taken his career even a little bit seriously. Even with the neck injury and physical limitations of being 5'11 280+, he was still capable of being an impact bat at 32 yrs old.

But Vlad has already taken his career much more seriously than Fielder ever did, is better than Fielder ever was already, and has a much more refined swing that's less likely to cause the type of catastrophic injury Fielder had.

The Murray comparison is probably a bit better for how we can expect Vlad to age, though Vlad has shown a high ceiling than Eddie had, more power, & better plate control.
