OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

What a legend. Fun way to end the season.

Regardless of when baseball resumes again, this is probably the end of an era for the Jays. Not just for this particular group of players, but the end of the Jays being able to buy themselves out of their failure to draft and develop, especially pitching. Of the 7 guys they had lined up to start games this year (Gausman-Cease-Lauer-Ponce-Scherzer-Yesavage-Bieber) 6 were added as FA. I doubt we’ll see anything like that again.

Good post at some point FA can only do so much for your line up

You need balance and the advantage of rookies to offset UFA spending

The Jays have done well with secondary cheap help like Bateman , Valenzuela , etc...

Team has good prospects close to MLB ready

I don't see why it would stop tbh.
Because there will probably be some kind of salary cap/floor.

I suppose they could keep relying on FA exclusively to build a pitching staff, but they won’t be playing in the deep end of the pool anymore if they do that.

The team needs to do a better job at finding value players. The past 4-5 years, they've been willing to spend, and so you don't worry about 20m infielders or 15m relievers or whatever. But if you add a cap, then suddenly you can't rely on guys like that, and have to find another way to find some of those value guys.

A reasonable floor and hard cap not much higher than what the Jays spend now should spread the talent around

Dodgers , Mets , etc... all cant blow their brains out now and will need to offload some contracts

Teram has done a decent job with value secondary players

Bateman , Lukes , Clement , Valenzuela , etc...

They will need to pump the brakes on 15-20 mil additions with the top heavy salaries on this roster

They need to get value out of low-mid tier FA and pre or early arbitration players. For every Lukes, Clement, Valenzuela etc you have 3-4 guys like Loperfido, Ty France, Lenyn Sosa, Dax Cameron, Ali Sanchez, etc to cycle though before you get to anyone good. Every team does this, but I’d say the Jays have been pretty lucky to fill out a decent portion of their lineup with these guys. They’ve also been smart to move on from guys who aren’t hacking it. But that won’t work every year.

A cap is also going to put a hard stop on how many non-contributors you can handle. The Jays will pay $75 million next year for Gimenez, Berrios, Santander, and Yariel Rodriguez. On a team with no upper spending lot, that’s manageable. In a cap environment this contracts are going to be serious anchors.

Ty France was actually good for the Jays last year, and they should have re-signed him this year (France put up a 3.5 fWAR this year).

Gimenez was 2nd on the Jays with 2.8 fWAR this year.

How is there no IR concept to bury these?

yeah France instead of Springer in the DH spot would have been a hell of an improvement
