OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Don't think that's a hard and fast rule.

McGowan, Drabek, and Cecil are all possibilities for the 'pen.

The view of this team to the average person right now is its a team with a lot of promise but without an owner willing to do what it takes to make the high impact moves to put it over the top (which is insane since it just dropped over 600 million to buy two other sports teams). It is also appearing we have a GM afraid to jump into the free agent frenzy weather it be from financial restrictions (which he has said is not an issue) or general lack of whatever.

You gotta keep in to perspective the approach that the Jays have had since AA took over. 2013~ has been the year they were building towards and the "average person" is a complete moron if they think Anthopoulos has done anything but an excellent job at any point of his tenure.

What do you mean by, "afraid to jump into the free agent frenzy?". Free agency, throughout the last 15 years has been a fantastic way to set a franchise back. Gross over-payments for guys that usually aren't worth much of anything halfway through their deals. We've got elite prospects coming at every position, and a lot of them will be MLB ready by the end of this year.

With trades being the main source of potential new talent. Which should be fine considering considering the depth and talent of this young club in the minors. It is just not as fast as some of us would like it. However, the overall vision is looking good.

See that's a pretty good take on it. And yo have to keep in mind that the "average" fan isn't the one calling in to talk shows. The reason these people are calling in is because they are reactionary lunatics. Most knowledgeable fans can't stand them and don't bother to be associated with that garbage.

AA has done an excellent job, and I think it's unfair to group one section like the offseason and put so much pressure on him to overhaul the team within that time frame. Every 2-3 months since he has taken over he has made a dramatic change to the team and it's all been built towards being a powerhouse in 2013 and beyond.

The notion that he hasn't spent big time coin on one or two guys to put them over the top is such a misinformed statement. The moves that will put the Jays over the top are the ones he's made for Lawrie, Rasmus, Escobar, Drabek/d"arnaud/Gose extending Bautista when all these geniuses said not to, drafting high end talent as opposed to just guys that were willing to sign for cheap, bringing in Santos when no one knew he was available, etc etc etc.

AA in the man.

Rotation

Romero
Morrow
Alvarez
Cecil
Drabek/McGowan

Bullpen

CL- Santos
8th- Janssen
7/8/LHB- Oliver
MR- Drabek/McGowan
MR- Litsch/Camp
MR/LR- Perez
LR- Villanueva

-Carreno, Beck, Jenkins, McGuire are all guys that can step in if need be as well. The glaring hole is a #2 starter. Morrow has what it takes, needs to put it together. Alvarez is too young to expect too much. That said a good #1 and 4 #3/4's ain't bad.

Damn near stood up and started a slow clap.......well said sir.

Oliver is a good pick up. Exactly what they needed, assuming his arm can hold up. But if its held up this long it shouldn't be an issue.

I have to admit, I was kind of embarrassed when I saw Oliver's numbers after we'd signed him, at how incredibly good they were and how oblivious I'd been to just how rock solid he'd been the last few years.

Compared to the guy I had at #1 on my list of left handed relievers for the back of our pen, Oliver knocks his dick in the dirt.

This is a very good point. The jays are also victums of doing this during the JP era with the signings of Frank thomas, bj ryan, AJ etc etc and it clearly didnt work and it set the franchise back until AA took over and had to start the process all over again.

It's amazing how many jays fans (especially over at scout) whining over the fact the jays arent going out and blowing their wad on free agency. AA is trying to build a consistent winner and the "average fan" just wants a winner now (because they havent seen one since 1993), even if it means sucking shit in 2-3 years from now.

And I still say MapleLeafBlueJayBoy is reading too much of that crap over at scout ;p

Just want nothing but the best for this team. I am down with AA and what he is doing. I just am concerned about blow back from the fan base. But as was mentioned, if they win, they will come back. Perhaps I am over thinking it. I just want this team to succeed.

I thought that 2012 was always the year? It's incredibly annoying that they keep incrementally moving back the goal-posts as they go along.

ESPN:

Several clubs have been linked to Prince Fielder this offseason, but a few may or may not have dropped out, if they had interest with which to begin. Among those is the Baltimore Orioles, but Roch Kubatko writes Friday that there is no chance the O's extend themselves to $20 million per season or more over eight-plus seasons, which likely eliminates them.

The Washington Nationals' interest has been rumored, discussed, denied, rumored and denied again, but Jon Heyman tweets that a Washington Nationals player says the club is in on the first baseman.

The Texas Rangers may have been the favorites before landing the rights to right-hander Yu Darvish, but the Post's Thomas Boswell opines that the Rangers will be in on Fielder if they do not reach agreement with Darvish. We should probably avoid eliminating the Rangers altogether -- even if they sign Darvish -- since they do have revenue streams unmatched by 27 other clubs in baseball.

The Chicago Cubs have been seen as the favorites in some circles, but if they are moving right-hander Matt Garza, that isn't a sign they're going for it in 2012 and 2013, rendering Fielder rather useless to them.

The Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays also have interest, according to various reports.

The Chicago Cubs may be fielding offers for right-hander Matt Garza as you read this, and their asking price is certain to be about young talent. Jon Heyman tweets that the club is requesting young starting pitching in return.

Since Garza himself is young, we can only presume that means is prospects or pre-arbitration type arms. Heyman notes that the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees have what it takes to get Garza. The Jays could offer Kyle Drabek, as well as prospects such as Noah Syndergaard, Justin Nicolino and Asher Wojiechowski. The Yankees have lefty Manny Banuelos and right-hander Dellin Betances.

Other clubs that could have serious interest include the Texas Rangers, despite the pending acquisition of Yu Darvish. The Rangers could offer Matt Harrison and/or Martin Perez to the Cubs. The Tigers could offer Rick Porcello and the Red Sox have the likes of Anthony Ranaudo, Stolmy Pimentel and Matt Barnes. Barnes, a 2011 draftee who signed in August, can't be traded until mid-February, and even then as a player to be named.

I have no idea where to find a source of that and I'm not going to go through the hassle of going back and looking for one, but I do distinctly recall hearing it mentioned and I know many other fans personally who have expressed similar confusion over this off-season based on a 2012 time-line.

There is no problem with waiting until the young players are close to coming to fruition on an internal time-line for contention, but it would be preferable if dates were not publicly mentioned and give the fan-base false hope if that is the case.
