OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

I like the trade though. Stephen is a decent prospect but probably ways off and apparently most likely to end up in the pen. Bieber has potential to be an impact player down the stretch and in the playoffs. In which case, yeah, he probably will decline the player option. If he doesn’t make it back, they’ll have him in the rotation next year. Kind of win/win.

We’re in first, this is good use of some of that new prospect capital.

Listen the SP market is flawed as fuck.

Do you want a stable cheap option that doesn't move the needle like Adrian Houser or Charlie Morton? Sure, maybe, will be cheap

Do you want a former CY Young winner having an absolutely terrible year in Sandy Alcantara, but he's controlled so still mega expensive?

Do you want a former CY Young winner coming off TJ and currently rehabbing, who will surely pickup his 16M player option if he's awful or reinjures himself? Cool, meet Shane Bieber

Do you want a super expensive rental that is basically the same level of talent as the 5 you have? Cool, meet Merrill Kelly.

Do you want to try for a controlled young arm having the first really good year of his career that drains your system? Meet Edward Cabrera.

Unless Sonny Gray or something was available and willing to come here, i think i respect the Bieber gamble.

Every pitcher is an injury risk. At least when guys come back from TJ, they have a new UCL, which is the one thing we fear the most about every pitcher. Not everyone is the same after surgery, however.

The Biebs FB velo was declining for a couple of years before he blew out his elbow, but he generally has great secondaries and command. Sometimes command is the last thing to come back though, so that's something to keep an eye on. The reports on his recent outings have been very encouraging. If he's right, he's in our top 3 and starting a playoff game.

Definitely a gamble, and I hate to give up Stephen but we knew we'd be giving up good prospects at this deadline. Would be great if we can resign Bieber to a multi-year deal if he pitches well.

Preller in SD is the league's riverboat gambler. de Vries looks like he could be a superstar, it's a crazy price to pay and we definitely couldn't beat that. Mason Miller is electric though.
