OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

So this is the bare minimum they can do and still be accused of going for it.

Dominguez is a great add at a really good price. No notes

Bieber could be a great add at a fair price, and could blow up in their face. None of the other SP that went today really do much for me

Watching the Yankees get Bednar and Doval for lite packages is fucking malpractice.

As long as nothing bad happens to what Louis Varland is doing this is a fine but super expensive add, that said, i dont get the fascination with 5 years of control on a RP, cause its a fucking RP ( see Erik Swanson)

I havent looked to see if Ty France mashes LHP, but he's basically an underwealming 1B only that i think is going to struggle to get PA and at best is a Myles Straw PH upgrade? This feels like reverse Vogelbach.

Bleh

Happens a lot when people move from the rotation to the pen, velo plays up in 1-2 innings instead of trying to pace yourself over 5-6.

Looking at his stats, he's always had excellent command. Will be really nice to have a guy come out of the pen who can throw strikes.

He got smacked around out of the pen last year too though so it's not just the change in roles. He's just better this year.

I guess i appreciate the balls shown on this trade too tbh.

Varland would have been adored here as a minor leaguer - great numbers to go along with his big arm, as an SP too. And he doesn't look like SP material in MLB but has been really great as an RP. He's been as good or better than any Jays RP this year.

But Roden is likely a solid MLBer going forward, and Rojas has impact upside, so this one could hurt.

They are betting on Varland bigtime, and the cost was very high. Huge risk here so it better work out, but to be fair to the FO after all my criticisms - i can't get mad at this big swing.

Ty France is a bit annoying - i think i might have appreciated the trade more if it was just Varland tbh.

On the other trade i don't love losing Wagner but tbh i actually do have some time for Valenzuela. He's got some solid component stats that let him be a decent hitter whenever babip isn't killing him, which is promising for a defense first C. My question is whether he has shown any promising splits as a switch hitter.

I think they insisted on Rojas and Roden, and the France inclusion was just a throw in to make the Jays feel like they were getting something more for their assets. Like a hockey trade where a team extracts like a 6th rounder just to get something more before pulling the trigger.

Yeah I don t like this trade at all. Roden is a better hitter than Ty France right now. You can’t judge him by 98AB in the majors this year. He has a 150wrc+ in AAA, a .409 OBP in his minors career. He walks as much as he strikes out (about 13% BB and K rate, both outstanding). Decent defence and some versatility. He is good. This is a major sell-low on Roden. Dumb. I like Rojas too, he has high-end upside even though there’s a lot of risk.

But also, fuck it, Varland most likely makes them better for the next few months. They’ll lose this big long term but nobody will care if Varland pitches a few big innings in the World Series.

Funny enough, Varland's name wasn't mentioned by anyone here even once, and he looks like a pretty great add. Just wish it wasn't for both those guys and only one of them instead.

But MLB prospects grow on trees. You get a ton of them in every single draft. It's why the best teams still always have a bunch of great prospects, unlike hockey where your cupboards are basically bare after a couple of trades.
