OT: World Politics

Well, if the policy is to do a thing whenever any world leader dies, then they should do that thing.

There is also the obvious fact that when LOF said it was crazy to do the thing, he specifically argued that Iran would never do that (probably, since we don't even know that for sure), which was the point I was responding to. As if that's a valid reason.

Also, if you're taking morality advice from Bill Ackman, you're doing it wrong.

so you want flags at half mast for Putin? there's gotta be a line somewhere

Sure, the line is whether or not you have normalized diplomatic relations with said country. If you don't want to treat them with something resembling respect, cut diplomatic ties. Once you've made the decision to have diplomatic relations with them, you act with a baseline of decorum whether they deserve it or not.

If you want to have a conversation about whether we should cut ties with Iran, Russia, etc, etc take the pain and sanction them (and anyone who helps them skirt the sanctions) into the centre of the fucking earth, that's a conversation I'm interested in having.

this is a principled position. I don't know if I fully agree with it (on first glance, it is sound), but I appreciate the logic.

The whole selling point of "The West" and why we're supposed to be the example for developing countries to aspire to be is that we're supposed to be guided by something resembling humanist principles, even when it's an uncomfortable position to be in.

We don't always do a great job of it, but it's our value proposition to the rest of the world.

Also, well-deserved sanctions are why they are flying in 40-year-old helicopters to begin with. Combined with the paranoia of refusing to use Western OR Russian GPS systems and the inability to create their own.

Holy shit, we're so saddened by the loss of a mass murderer who was strategizing to kill some of our top leaders too.

The world has suffered a major loss and we grieve for you, our foreign friends who are setting off fireworks locally to celebrate his death.

It’s just a diplomatic protocol that has no material bearing on anything, whether they are enemies or not. I mean, the death of any head of state could be disputed by anyone which makes the enemy/friend thing completely pointless. Hence the use of protocol. The UN lowered their flags for Kim Jong Il in 2011.

And to be clear, this guy was a murderous thug. Hence the fireworks. No UN flag protocols will alter his appalling legacy.
