Wayward Ditch Pig
I keep seeing serious takes written about why we're supposed to take this super seriously but I just can't get there. Vlad probably wants North Korean boots on the ground to help in Ukraine but poorly trained soldiers that don't speak Russian are of no help on the front lines. They can dig ditches so the current ditch diggers are spending more time being shot at I guess, but that's about the extent of it. NK will happily sell them bad equipment and shells with a 50% fail rate but that shit isn't helping Russia. On the NK side, this does wonders for their internal propaganda machine but mutual defence promises from Russia kind of aren't worth fuck all at the moment. Every time I try to be concerned about anything Russia does right now one simple fact keeps jumping out: Russia has no spare capacity. They've converted to a full on war economy just to hold a country 20% their size to a draw because that 20% has occasional access to NATO's garage sale.
NK starts a fight with SK and cries for help when SK and the Americans run an absolute fucking train on everything the regime has built over the last 20 years? I'm sure Russians tears at the security council meetings will garner a lot of international sympathy. The Chinese are going to be aggravated by anything that brings more American attention to the region, & increases Japanese & Aussie militarization. They're unlikely to do anything that sets their Taiwan timelines back as long as the borders in Korea don't change.
It's hard to look at this and not just see one weak dictator reaching out to the Hermit King for help and needing it bad enough to be a willing participant in a North Korean dog & pony show.
