Autocracies lie. They lie in a way completely foreign to jaded citizens who live in democracies who think that they're government is lying to them. They lie about everything purely on principle because the act of you wanting to know anything at all wears away at their power to dictate. We think we understand what political corruption is, we really, really don't.

Oh, your government revised job figures up or down a few tenths of a percent?? That's proof that they're "lying to you". Russia is claiming 3.6% GDP growth and presenting a slew of economic data showing prosperity, but yet charging 21% interest on bonds. That math doesn't math.

Oh, it's probably wrong and the official numbers are probably wrong. Russia is about as post-fact a semi functioning state as there is on the planet. I doubt even Putin is given an accurate representation of the country in official reports. Everyone lies to save their ass while filling their pockets whenever they can. We just see the more outward hilarious parts like their military modernization spending 10's of billions on items that sat on paper manifests for years and made western military bloggers jerk off at Russian strength but turned out to not exist when it came time to bring it to war.

That's actually probably the single most apt and striking comparison of the US v Russia. When Russia went to war their modern "battle ready" equipment largely didn't exist and they were very quickly dipping into stockpiles of late Soviet era guns and tanks to use on the front lines. Allegedly advanced modern systems turned out to be slightly modified/upgraded and rebadged versions of older technology (S-400 vs S-300 for example) that they had very short supply of. When they dipped into old stockpiles of weapons that had been stored, it was mostly shit rotting in fields that required significant rebuilding to make fit for service.

On the American side of the ledger and they decided to clear out some old gear to help in Ukraine, it was 30-40 yr old pieces of gear that have turned out to be better than Russias new stuff (like 40 yr old Bradley's deep dicking T-90's on video). The Americans knew exactly how much of whichever piece they had in storage and very little refurbishment was needed. This seems like a relatively small thing, but it's evidence of a high functioning administrative state vs a non functioning and deeply corrupt administrative state.

I've come a long way since getting my license at 16 and thinking cops were mostly just a bunch of donut gorging bums. Now I want ten cops on every street corner just in case.

This shit is going to spread to the US and Canada soon, in all likelihood. And for whatever other issues or problems he may bring with him or outright cause, on this one issue alone, I do feel infinitely better about what Trump's response to this shit would be than whatever Harris' would be.
