You’re giving players way too much credit...for the most part, they are not smart enough to see past the coaching staff. For them, all the world’s problems begin and end with the coach. The GM is this dude that they need to contact once every few years to discuss money.
I am looking at a decent roster player plus a good prospect in return before the season starts .

Kings are not exactly a high scoring team either.
As a free agent he gets to decide where to move his family. Maybe he does not want the travel as he ages, etc.
Maybe the money was not good.
The last deal he bet against himself. I do not see him doing it again.
The last deal was his " shit I almost lost my head by Chara " contract . He took a fair contract for 6 years when he was not a finished product and in the new CBA time frame .
All I am saying is this new NHL of going younger and teams reluctant to hand out term to aging vets the last few years is a major gamble .
Who would you rather play with ...Kopitar or Carter as your center with Doughty on the back end or Dano with a bunch of slugs on your top 9

If I'm him I would probably hold out until I'm traded. The risk of injuries and the likely hood of a poor season given the roster is little incentive to start the season.
