The Canes look to make it 6 straight.

Stankoven’s line remained on fire with Stanky scoring twice and Blake adding the other and an assist on Stanky’s first. Hall assisted on Blake’s goal, Mike Reilly came out of the press box and added 2 assists. The Canes still haven’t gotten anything out of the PP or Aho’s line, assists on Stanky’s 2nd goal notwithstanding.

The Flyers found their game in the 3rd and had a late 6 on 4 PP but couldn’t dent Andersen. They missed leading scorer Owen Tippett on Saturday. He’s probably a game time decision today, he’s been dealing with an injury all postseason but Saturday was the first game he missed,

According to Flyers fans, the barn will be empty except for a few thousand Flyers fans, and they'll win by 14 goals on the way to a 5 game series finale.

I used to think Buffalo fans were the absolute dumbest SOBs with access to the internet. Flyers fans have proven me wrong. What's in the water up there?

So, Game 2. I think we can go ahead and dispense with a few lines of thinking.

1. No, Carolina’s not going to make it look as easy as it looked in Game 1 for an entire series. This will almost certainly be a more evenly contested game, more in line with what we saw in the regular season from these two.

2. No, the Flyers didn’t mount some sort of comeback in the 3rd period on Saturday. They gooned it up and turned the game into one of those ridiculous lost cause debacles that we see all the time in the playoffs. The idea that “we’re just fine” won’t cut it here. They need to find a game plan that actually works and pronto. I expect them to make some matchup changes and figure some things out.

3. Stankoven is the hottest forward in the league right now, not the best. Some other line is going to have to pitch in eventually.

4. (And yes, I’ve actually seen this) No, Mike Reilly shouldn’t stay in the lineup even if Nikishin can play tonight. God help us but the playoffs make some people stupid.

OK, carry on. I’m interested to see what Philly does with their structure tonight. They made way too many mistakes trying to break puck pressure and seemed surprised that Carolina varied their forecheck so much in Game 1. I expect more patience from them, and if they learned anything from Ottawa, maybe more concentration on maintaining possession when they get the puck into the offensive zone. I get that their scoring against Carolina in the past has mostly come off quit hitting plays, but they can’t afford to chase those at the expense of forcing the Canes to defend their own zone.

For Carolina, I’m interested to see what if any changes they make to their power play setup. Everything else worked pretty well, but they’re still not generating quality chances on the PP like they did in the second half. Everybody has dialed up the pressure and everybody is taking away that seam pass so it’s time for Plan B to kick in. Past time, in fact. Also, they were able to get a forward to split the D in the middle on their breakouts a few times by mixing in an extra pass on the back end. I’m interested to see if that starts to be more of a regular feature … especially when the Seeler/Juulsen pair is on the ice. I’m also intrigued as to whether they continue to chip and chirp Zegras since he clearly lost his mind in Game 1. I’m not sure they set out to do that, but it certainly was a thing that happened. Also, I mentioned Carolina varying their puck pressure, and that was really interesting. They only went with the big heat forechecking pressure with two forwards deep on turnovers and slower developing plays, falling back into a softer 1-2-2 a lot more than normal. That had the effect of getting the Flyers off balance and forcing them to make a read before they got into their breakouts. It also forced some mental mistakes. That was a twist from Brindy and is worth keeping an eye on.

At the morning skate, Miller had the day off again, Nikishin skated in his place with Walker, Reilly was with Ghost. After practice, RBA said he expected the same lineup as Saturday, so Reilly stays.m he called it a “health decision”. With the next game on Thursday, I guess the idea is to give Nikishin a few more days to recover. RBA said he didn’t feel right, not that he failed the last protocol test on Saturday.

It’s my understanding based on the context of the questions that Nikishin is out of the formal protocol and is available whenever he feels ready. That said, concussion symptoms can be tricky and can come and go regardless of activity. If he ain’t feeling it, then best not to push it.

My prediction
the phylers will concentrate on Stanks line and Aho’s line will capitalize on it.
Yeah, against a slower/thinner team Tocchet could take a risk and try to get by shifting Couturier up against a secondary scoring line, but the Canes ain’t really built for that option. He’s kind of stuck going some flavor of best on best. If Tippett can go, that helps them a lot because his speed and elusiveness helps take the pressure off his line and set up extended possession. Which is exactly what they need from somebody’s line. But on the road, he’s kind of stuck with the matchups Brindy wants and that’s a bigger deal in this series. Thus far Carolina has been content to let Aho’s bunch cancel out the other team’s threat, but I noticed that Jarvis looked a lot more like himself in Game 1. If he’s coming around, Brind’Amour might try to get them untracked a bit. We’ll see.

Not sounding like Tippett is going to be a go tonight from the Philly media chatter this afternoon. Legault sent back to Chicago this afternoon too so Boom must be close to back to normal. Looking forward to the Canes doing what they do best tonight and taking a stranglehold on the series.

Yeah, teams are rushing the point and taking away the crosses through the zone, which forces Carolina to play through that high bumper position
They just don’t have anybody who’s a natural there. Stankoven is the closest, and … yeah. He’s been OK this post season, I guess. Might be tempted to bump him up to Aho’s group and moving Jarvis or Svech down to the second group. I doubt you’d do that though. Without Nikishin, that second group relies on Stank, Hall and Blake to kind of create their own little 3 on 2 mismatches. It’s working pretty well and you don’t want to mess up both units.
