Playoff Memories

No way they would have called it back even today!

they don't even do that shit anymore...it's fun to watch, but almost everything is different now... from blatant interference to goalie pads to power play tactics (so many point shots back then)

all the pro sports have changed -- not just hockey

First thing you notice is how bad the dmen skated backwards. My son plays adult league and he is 3x the skater NHL dmen were in the 1980s

Goalie pads’ size is the biggest reason people under 35 generally lack respect for Wayne Gretzky’s scoring records.

ok.... but that doesn't explain how much better he did than anyone else

That team had 10 rookies. It was a great team by ‘89, despite losing to the Flames in the Lanny final. Roy sucked in that series. But that was the best Flames team ever. Really good.
Still pisses me off. Had a 2-1 series lead with Game 4 at home and they stunk the joint out.

I'd suspect the opposite. Prior to the dead puck era of the 90's goalie pads were not overly big nor were the goalies themselves. 1986 Patrick Roy was a lot easier to beat one on one than 1996 Patrick Roy, who's equipment blocked out the sun.

I agree with you, I’m just saying that’s the argument you typically get from the youngen’s. And I respond the same way you did. Mario too over Crosby on the same basis: era dominance.

89 team was our best one. Only the Flames were better that year, one of the few instances where the 2 best teams met in the playoffs.

I still blame Stan Smyl for not scoring on that breakaway in overtime of Game 7 in the first round. Had the Canucks upset the Flames we would have tap danced to an easy championship that year. Flames won that game on a goal that today wouldn't even be allowed. Joel Otto standing in the crease interfering with the goalie and kicking the puck into the net.

After that, I knew that Calgary was going to be a problem we had to solve if we wanted to win the Cup. And after we won Game 3 in double OT to take a 2-1 series lead, I thought we had solved it but instead we lost the next 3 in embarrassing fashion. People should have been fired.

Well Gainey retired after this, Robinson and Green got traded. Then we traded Lemieux, Chelios and Smith the next year, and Naslund moved back to Sweden.

2021 collapse by Toronto was surprising. After that I knew they were making the run. Too bad they couldn't close that deal.

As they should. Doesn't change the numbers though.

But like I've said, Howe had 975 goals (NHL+WHA) so he's still the all-time goals leader in all of professional hockey history and has the added bonus of not being a fascist.
but wouldn't he have been an ignorant hillybilly hick from Saskatchewan, the type of person you hate?
