Preseason GDT #7 - babcock surprises me

sandin-liljegren should be first callups, imo.
Handle them like they did Dermott last season.

If they can become a legit #1 pair in the AHL, then you consider calling one, the other or maybe both at the halfway mark of the season.

If they don't become quite that good, then leave them in the AHL.

I'm not even sure if his production has dropped off with age.

Pre-Thornton, he was a 20 goal/50 point type guy. Once he started skating on a line with Joe, his production jumped to 30+ goal, near ppg guy. His production only dips back to his pre-Thornton years in the seasons where his ice time with Joe drops off markedly.

His current production level is pretty much at what it was when he was in his early 20s and whenever he wasn't on a regular line with Joe Thornton. (I've only eyeballed this data over on naturalstattrick but it would track remarkably well if compiled.)

This suggest that there's a reasonable case for expecting his production to increase over last year now that he'll be playing with a comparably high talent level to his Thornton years in SJ.

The guys is a freak of good health. His missed about 25 games over 20 seasons and hasn't missed one in a decade.

Just pre-season and we have faced shitty competition, but lots of encouraging signs so far.

Leivo and Ozzy have gotten the gold stars for me.

No question the Leafs forward group is impressive and barring injury they should remain that way. They’ll get even better when Nylander decides to return. I still have questions on Andersen and a heavy work load. The D is serviceable but you gotta give the D nod to Tampa in this division. It should be interesting to watch this season.

I find tampa's D overrated.

Starting with Hedman, who's non-offensive contributions aren't nearly as good as advertised.

I take Tampa’s D over yours all day long.

I like Toronto’s forward group better due to age.

Goaltending is close.

If Rielly doesnt clean his shit up in his own end it's going to be a long year for him

Was looking at the PP Opp from last season. I know the Leafs ranked 29th in PP chances with 224, but didn’t know Tampa was 2nd with 276 PP chances. Tampa ended up with 296 goals to the Leafs 277 goals. The difference in PP Opportunities is a big game-changer.

Give the Leafs the number of powerplays Tampa got and vice-versa, with even just a minor bump in PP% for the Leafs, there’s a strong chance at 300+ goals. They take the division if they do that.

For a #1 guy, Rielly ain't no great shakes defensively. Put an hold Hainsey with him and we've got ourselves a shitty top pair.
