PS GDT - Leafs @ Sens 7:30PM SNET

- If Babs doesn't even try someone else on Matthew's LW in pre-season that tells you how much he loves Hyman. And I don't hate Hyman. I just think he has no place to be a fixture on the LW1. He can be a very effective LW3 imo, good PKer, but just watch last night and you'll see how much he drags down the offense of the Matthews-Nylander unit.

- I think Leivo looked good and deserves at least a try of top 6 role in pre-season, but in the post game interview Babs was asked "What did you think of Josh's play? He seems to look comfortable with Matthews and Nylander on the PP" and Babs said "Josh? .... you mean Leivo?" .... tells you all you need to know of what Babs thinks of Leivo

- Rosen and Dermott did look good. Rosen particularly plays a simple game and it was effective

- Rielly had a bad outing

- and Moore looked very bad as well, but i hope it's a vet thing where he doesn't treat Game #1 of pre-season like a rookie would

- Kapanen has skills and I'd like him to make the team this year

- McEl was BAD, but Sparks found a way to be even worse

Look forward to game #2 tonight with Marleau making his debut

He'd mentioned earlier in the interview that Dermott and Rosen were the only two players he liked in the game.

He also mentioned, when someone asked him about Leivo, "well, I already told you which players I liked, right?"

So yeah...not a ringing endorsement of Leivo.

Though to be fair, Leivo had some defensive moments that were...not great. One Senators goal in particular came when Leivo was cherry-picking on the far side of the ice at the Ottawa blueline, waiting for a pass. When the Sens counter attacked, instead of skating hard to get back in the play, Leivo slowly meandered to the bench and the Sens scored before Leivo's replacement could even get back to the Leaf zone.

So, I dunno. Leivo may be in for the Frankie Corrado treatment again this year.

And if that's the case, why bother keeping a roster spot for him? Trade him to the highest offer now and let Sosh / Kap / whoever else who can play in the NHL now get that spot.

Every so often there's a guy who looks really impressive when he first arrives, and then just tails off.

Leivo is my likeliest candidate for that distinction. I think we eventually trade him for a mid round pick.
