RBA Re-signs

So no Stormy Daniels coming in to change things up…Jeff it is yet again. Glad Rod is done and the out of market media can go bugger off on something else.

Well, glad that HCRBA has been re-signed, but the other guys? /sigh So what's going to change? What improvements will be made? Will there be *any* introspection on how this season ended? And do any of the local sports media have the courage to ask at least that question?

Media has plenty else to chew on with the Canes and all of the pending UFAs and RFAs.

Expect to hear from the media that we are not close to signing any of our players and that we lowballed every one of them. Necas is getting an offer sheet, Jarvis is going to hold out, Guentzel won't even take Waddell's calls, Chatfield's rights will get traded to Detroit for a 7th round pick. Dundon is so cheap that not a single free agent will be retained.

This is the least surprising news to anyone who closely follows the Canes. Glad they wrapped this up and hope the conversations about how we can be more "relevant" in the playoffs ensues within the Canes management team.

Dreger says it’s a 5 year deal for RBA. I thought I saw someplace that the assistants were 2 and a club option, if that’s the case, it’s a big change from business as usual.

Maybe the theory is to give them multi year deals so they can experiment with new systems with some job security? Best I’ve got.

All I know is this is good news. Dundon et al would have undone a lot of progress in winning culture and this organization’s relevance in the hockey world had RBA not been re-signed and re-signed to a multi year deal. I don’t see JD going anywhere without RBA. Those two are tied at the hip, kind of like Laviolette and Kato were.

Good that Rod is signed but why the (insert appropriate word here) are the other guys so important to him.

Yeah, either way ... this HAD to be settled before the front office can get on with the rest of the summer. Now they know what they're (re)building for.

I don’t have a problem with Gleason being extended, the defensive core is sound, the Pk has been exceptional every year. Daniels? Not so much. And it’s all about the PP. Daniels played 425 games in the NHL. He spent as much time on the PP as it’s taken me to type this post. It’s stale and predictable.

My concern extends beyond the power play. The Canes have at least one and generally two runs during the season when their offense becomes basically lifeless ... stuck in neutral largely because of a lack of penetration and a satisfaction to merely pump shots on net without concern for quality. Blame Daniels, blame Brind'Amour ... don't care, but JD looks after the forwards and this is mostly an issue with that position group.

Either way, you can't say that what they've been doing structurally doesn't work overall. So running back the staff isn't a negative, really. I'd just like some fresh ideas.

Now that Rod and company are done the Canes and Dandy Don can now start rolling up their sleeves and working through the mountain of new contracts and free agents…they also retained their first round draft pick since they didn’t make the Finals, so they do have some draft capital to concentrate on.

See, that's the thing. Will they do some introspection and think about what can be changed up, tweaked, overhauled? Or are they stuck in 4th gear with no idea how to get it into 5th and 6th gears for the playoffs? Do they even know that the 5th and 6th exist? Again, will anyone in the local media have the courage to ask these questions? Adam Gold, do you have this in you or are you too afraid of not being buddies with Brindy anymore? Screw access journalism and get tough.

The power play and box play has been very good in the regular season pretty much every season under Rods reign, especially the box play. But during the play offs the power play has been around 15% in and box play around 75%. I don't like those stats very much.

Well, the team have taken a couple of different tacks over the last two or three years to address roster issues.

First they loaded up on offensive minded defensemen which kinda worked but not really. You could argue that Brind'Amour didn't utilize some of those guys particularly well, but honestly only Burns really integrated himself into the team's system. I mean, you could argue that DeAngelo did as well, at least as much as his meager defensive zone skills allowed. It took the playoffs for Orlov to really buy in, but I think he made some progress and hopefully the staff learned a few things about how to unlock him.

In terms of the forwards, they made some efforts to add guys with more netfront presence but that accomplished next to nothing due to poor integration. They also took that big swing to add finishing with Guentzel and again, it kinda/sorta worked ... but not well enough.

If they're sticking to their guns on the system then I think you have to continue to bang away on areas where the existing roster is lacking while maintaining enough of a grinding presence to make the pressing forecheck work. Foremost is the lack of quality and production from the centers who aren't named Aho. Secondarily you still need wingers who actually produce counting stats both at even strength and on the power play.
