Reminder ... Caniac Carnival Sunday 9/20

You'd best be in line at the crack of dawn if you want to eat at Cousins. Worth it though, especially if they have lobster tots.
 
When does camp start? You'd think they'd have this published on the website by now. Maybe I'm missing it.
 
Camp starts this week but it seems like they should have put out the date for sure. They most likely will do physicals on Thurs. or Friday since they have the scrimmage on Sun and a game on Monday.

That's the normal course of things. They usually kick off camp proper with the Carnival scrimmage meaning the physicals have to be done before that. Looking at the website, this year they are doing it a bit differently and will actually open camp on Friday morning. So physicals are today and tomorrow, one would assume. They have enough camp invitees this year to split into 3 groups instead of 2 as they've done in the past. The Monday and Tuesday games in DC and Pittsburgh are a hitch in the works, coming so early in the process. Presumably we'll see vastly different lineups for each of those two games to get more of a look at more bodies. I also noticed they the schedule drops all mention of Group c once they get back from that trip ... so first cuts will likely be right after those games. FWIW, the only pure camp tryout invitee is a kid named Niki Petti, an undrafted center who played last season for Belleview in the OHL. I assume he's auditioning for a slot in Charlotte of the ECHL. Also FWIW, with three full groups the camp roster includes most of the Checkers group ... but not all. Chad LaRose for example is NOT in camp.

Did Chad LaRose re-sign an AHL deal with Charlotte? I didn't see any news on that. I just assumed with the roster already filled with draft picks and some other signings that Chad was a goner for sure as Charlotte geared up to be a very competitive team.

I have the following forwards ticketed for Charlotte already:

Lucas Wallmark *** Might have to go back to Sweden, not sure
Phil DiGuiseppi
Brendan Woods
Erik Karlsson
Patrick Brown
Zack Boychuk
Sergey Tolchinsky
TJ Hensick
Carter Sandlak
Justin Shugg
Brody Sutter
Kyle Hagel
Either Derek Ryan or Joakim Nordstrom

Depending on Wallmark's situation that is already 13 or 14 forwards. I also didn't count Matt Willows who has an AHL/ECHL contract. Chad could provide some veteran depth I suppose but I haven't seen news that he was signed to an AHL deal yet. I think he is gone for good this time.

The D in Charlotte is pretty full as well:

Pesce/Lowe/Biega/Rissanen/Carrick/Slavin/Ganly.

I think Fleury/McKeown/Jenkins/Wesley all have junior eligibility left.

Right, next year something is going to have to give if we don't trade away some of these guys on D.

We will have Pesce, Carrick, Slavin, Ganly, Fleury, McKeown under contract and out of underage junior eligibility, Josh Wesley and Kyle Jenkins out of underage junior eligibility and potentially looking for contracts and then all of Biega, Lowe, Rissanen, Ryan Murphy, and Jordan as RFAs. You can see why we were more than willing to move Dennis Robertson in that Versteeg trade, we have too many young DMen many of which are not going to be NHLers or are not yet ready to be NHLers. Next year there will need to be a lot of decisions made on these guys who are going to be RFAs.

If your an optimist about how good our D prospects are, we have only 3 NHL DMen under contract for the 16-17 season...Faulk, Wisneiwski and Hainsey. Put Hanifin in there as well as the 4th and don't pick up anyone else then you have 3 spots open for our pile of DMen prospects next year. I don't think we will really not pick up at least one more NHL DMan for the 16-17 season, but I suspect that Ronnie and crew expect at least 2 of Pesce, Carrick, Slavin, Fleury, McKeown, Ryan Murphy, to fill at least 2 of those slots in 16-17. There has to be a pair of NHL DMen in that group you would hope.

You would hope Fleury and perhaps Pesce could both be NHL ready next season. By all accounts Fleury could challenge for a spot this year but if he goes back he likely dominates in the WHL and also plays for Canada at the World Junior tourney. Pesce, by all accounts is said to be a really smart player in his own zone defensively and very steady on the back end.

I would not mind Faulk, Hanafin, Fleury, Pesce, Wiz, Hainsey and Murphy next year over the likes of Liles, Jordan, etc.
 
Personally, I like that we've over-stocked the D in the organizational depth chart. Given our dire history in actually developing these guys into decent NHLers, that shows a healthy understanding of the job at hand. Which is to build a defense from our own system. It's cheaper and just flat out better to do things that way ... but can be a bit messy since D-men sometimes develop quite slowly. But look how well this approach has served teams like Detroit, Anaheim, LA and Nashville. Sure, they add the odd piece in trade or by free agency but the rank and file of their D is typically home grown.

Never forget ... especially in a Cap environment ... it's ALWAYS cheaper to develop your own NHL players.

So ... figure Hanifin might stick this season, and you'll need two more next season. You've got Fleury and McKeown as likely candidates along with Slavin and Pesce. If three of those five really develop, then the heat is off for the core of your D for a long time to come. Then if one or two of the other guys work out, that's great. If not you troll around for a couple of depth guys ... which is a danged sight easier than trying to find top pairing people on the market.

And for the record, I feel like we've seen pretty much all Lowe, Biega and Jordan have to offer, and everybody on earth knows where I stand on Murphy. I think you could make a deal or two out of that bunch.

Well nobody cares to comment about the scrimmage? It was mostly rookies and young players. 8 guys already sent to juniors but that was no surprise.
 
Just like Michael Smith commented in his wrap up, the guys with NHL experience dominated. A few of the prospects looked decent. McGuin stirs up trouble, Tolchinsky looks like Samsonov....stick handles for days, very elusive, but might struggle to score at the NHL level.
 
Hanifin is the real deal. Di Giuseppe looked surprisingly good but I thought the best player on that line was TJ Hensick. I really want to see more of Nick Roy, he's a monster. He had a nice combo with Brendan Woods on the OT winner. I thought Derek Ryan was, as Tripp would say, a going concern all game. Lucas Walmark had a sick finish for the first goal. But for the most part, it was Cherkers playing Cherkers so it was hard to get a read on them. We should be better in Charlotte though.

It was pretty uneventful from the period and a half I watched, like AndyT mentioned, Cherkers vs Cherkers for the most part.
 
Didn't attend the Carnival, but I did go to the STH event the day before. It was very enjoyable and as usual, Johnny F did an excellent job of fielding questions from the crowd and playing emcee to the 4 players they later brought out. We may suck as a team, but we've got gold in Forslund.

Someone asked about Joni Pitkanen and Forslund said he had just gotten word that he's now attempting to skate.
