Round 1: Leafs @ Bruins

Boston gives up less goals than the Leafs. So it would stand to reason that our goaltending would need to be a bigger part of our chances to win. Again, not sure what the issue is with this kind of narrative.

Not sure follow that logic.

Isn't the team that relies more on goal prevention the one that can't afford bad goaltending?

not really shocking that the main stream media has the Bruins and all the analytics guys have the Leafs.

Its a literal coin flip though. This should be a 2nd/3rd round series.

To be clear - I agree with anyone saying Andersen has to be good, and especially that Andersen has to be better than the last two playoffs for us to have a shot.

I disagree that he needs to steal us the series. He needs to not suck and give us a chance.

A few iffy goals and the Bruins will have a full blown goalie controversy. Hell if Toronto's goalie situation was similar, it would already be a massive controversy, as Halak probably should start.

"bad" Andy wins us the series last year. Average Andy wins it in 6. Elite Andy in 5. We got Froskala last year though, so ****ed.com it was.

Andy doesn't need to steal shit. He needs to not give it away on a silver platter.

Rask's Numbers since March 1st are not being mentioned. Freddie' s numbers are.

Leafs goalie is struggling. Rask is left alone. That's one of the narratives I have issue with.

They are certainly mentioning it in the Boston media.

Many people like yourself are also not mentioning how poor Rask was in the playoffs against us last year. Believe his save percentage was like .899 in that series. So also not great, and yet they still beat us.

Season

Rask: .912sv%, .656pts%
Fred: .917sv%, .670pts%

Last 10 Starts:

Rask: .871sv%, .500pts%
Fred: .881sv%, .500pts%

Last 5

Rask: .874sv%, .400pts%
Fred: .909sv%, .600pts%

Starting Rask over Halak would be a bigger lineup mistake than anything Babs does.
Yeah, I'm not sure why exactly Rask deserves to start by default in spite of his play.

The years of him being a high-end, .920+ goalie are getting distant in the rear-view mirror now. It's now been four straight years of him being a pretty average-at-best starting goalie. When combined with his awful play lately and Halak putting up great numbers over 40 games, this decision should be a no-brainer.

It's almost like the series was decided in the 3rd period of game 7 or something.

Ya the narrative is a different story.

The amount of times that I've heard things like "Andersen is going to have to be lights out for the Leafs to have ANY chance." Over the last few days is shocking.

It's basically become our only chance will be if Freddy steals the series. And make no mistake - if we win, even if Freddy just matches Boston's goalies, that will be the story the media runs with. It will be the only thing that allows them to save face.

It shall always be thus.

Post marked as "against the rules" for bringing up bad memories.

What's next? Video of #34 snow angel in the crease in a certain game 7 collapse?

One important thing that seems to not be discussed enough when talking about last years series results... Plekanec was our #2 center and matched up against Bergeron.

Yeah I get it. But this fact is not consistent with your premise of the series only going 7 because Anderson was so shambolic. Rask was also terrible. And it's almost like home ice made a difference and that it could have a similar effect this year?

Another big reason the series went 7 games is the Leafs weren't ready for the first 2. From game 3 to the 3rd period of game 7 the Leafs kind of dominated.

Hopefully they learned some valuable lessons about starting and finishing series.

I do agree that winning 1 in Boston would greatly improve our chances of taking the series.

Chances of us coming back down 0-2 would be quite low. [/obvious post]

Great point, one which I forgot.
Tavares should make a big big difference.
But as much as the leafs have made a huge upgrade for the forward position, their defence is really suspect. They routinely panicked when under pressure, and Anderson really has to put up or be swallowed by the sidelines indefinitely and a new search for goaltending will begin.
The game is played on the ice and no matter what we think, it means shit in the big picture.
If reilly, marner, tavares, Matthew's and Anderson are all going, then the leafs can be downright scary. The hard part is to have them all going at once.
Oh and btw, win or lose, babcock be on a ship headed to edmonton at the seasons end.

-career average Freddy. not even amazing Freddy
-normal production from Matthews and Nylander. not even going nuts production.
-The Mitch & JT Show continues its highly successful network TV run
-we don't have a key centre suspended

I think all those things have a reasonable chance of happening. None of them did last time, and we still led going into the 3rd period of game 7.

You know that I take Rask being bad into account when I make statements like that eh? There's no inconsistency here at all. Had Freddy been average (.918) Freddy, that series doesn't go 7 games. Yes, partially because Rask was bad. That Rask also sucked makes Freddy's performance look worse, not better. Freddy managed to do just enough to be worse than a guy who was trying to keep us in the series despite our goalie being inept.

And it's almost like home ice made a difference and that it could have a similar effect this year?

So Freddy would have stopped that Krug point shot in Toronto?
