Series Preview … ECF: Carolina vs Montreal

We have a schedule, we have game times (mostly), we have TV info, those of us with tickets have access to Games 1 and 2 … and we finally have an opponent. Montreal … come on down. Literally. It’s freaking hot here in the South and drier than your great uncle’s scalp. It’ll be grand, don’t worry.

So … Game 1 on Thursday gives the Canadiens one day to ice up and one day to prep before they get back on the horse. St Louis shortened his bench in Game 7, which won’t help with the fatigue. I’d expect them to keep it pretty basic for Game 1 and then try to get the split in Game 2 if they can. Meanwhile the Canes will probably also try to keep it pretty basic in Game 10 to knock off the rust. They've usually looked pretty good coming off of extended breaks, and Freddie got his battery pack recharged, so … yeah. It’s fine.

Matchup-wise for Carolina this is a whole different challenge. I mean, start with the power play and you’ll see that. They played two absolutely dreadful power play teams in the first two rounds and the Canadiens ain’t that. So maybe it would be a good idea to not take 500 penalties like they did in the first two series. It’s one thing to be confident in your PK and another to just be stupid. The system matchup is a lot more interesting this time, since Montreal doesn’t just hunker down and try to trap out of a soft forecheck. That should yield games with more flow, if the refs choose to not insert themselves quite so much. We’ll see about that.

I’ve gotta go do paying work, so … we can get into more later.

It would be a good time for Aho’s line and the PP to get untracked. The Habs have the worst PK among the last 4.

It will be interesting the see how RBA and Frodo deploy Aho and Suzuki. Aho’s line has drawn the tough defensive assignments while Suzuki is a Selje finalist, who happens to have a 50 goal scorer riding shotgun.

The TNT studio crew will be on site for all games, so McHugh, Biz, Canes legend Anson Carter, Gretzky and Hank will be there on Thursday and Saturday.

My wife has already informed me that she’s on a quest to find Hank. Her camera SD card was full of pictures of him at the 2011 All Star Game red carpet. I’ve come to terms with it.

A Gretzky autograph is never a bad thing on anything...Wayne-O, where you at?

Both first lines have kind of sucked offensively 5v5, while still holding down their end defensively. Wouldn’t shock me at all if both coaches were content to let them just square off in Game 1 and see what happens.

Quick thought on the series …

A lot of ink is currently being or fixing to be spilled on how this series will be quite different for the Hurricanes since they’re playing a team that’s actually good. And fair enough, although I’d argue that Ottawa was actually pretty good so long as they got goaltending (which they did). Still, it’s a solid enough point. This is the first time Carolina will face a team that’s actually dangerous on the power play, for example. And Dobes has given them trouble in limited exposure. That all said, this will also be quite different for the Canadiens as well. Tampa was on some sort of wild side quest to force as much of the game as possible to be played on special teams … PP, PK, they honestly didn’t seem to care so long as it wasn’t 5v5. Still not sure what the point of any of that was, but it was a thing that happened. Then they got a Buffalo team that seemed to run 100% on vibes. No structure, no systems, just run it out, fill every lane and see what happens. It was a big, fast team that seemed convinced that they could outscore any other concerns … not unlike Lindy Ruff’s Devils team in 2022-23. This Hurricanes team ain’t any of that, and it’s not the Hurricanes team of the last couple of seasons either … more open, looking for the rush, more mobile, less banged up on D (at the moment, at least), still as persistent in allowing as little open ice to their opponents as possible. Not just on the forecheck, but in all three zones. Game 1 will be interesting if for no other reason than to watch how these two teams react to playing an entirely different species of cat.
