Guardedly so, yes. Richards only got in 20 matches last season and Fiorentina took a pass on keeping him even though it would have only cost them a little more than a million pounds above his loan fee. That's not exactly the stuff of ringing endorsements. He's only been in 9 Premiere League matches since losing his place to Zabaleta a few years ago.

Still, anything like a return to his 2008-11 form and he'd be just a huge upgrade over any other options Villa have at right back. Hutton was our first choice when healthy and God know he's limited ... to be kind. Otherwise we saw a LOT of Bacuna at RB and he's a winger. So ... yeah. Happy enough.
 
On a free, half his old form would be an epic steal. For a four year deal, though, the wages better be reasonable.

I don't watch a lot of Villa matches but that's the impression that I had of him too. But for whatever reason, Sherwood kept him rooted to the bench, so to find first team football on a candidate for promotion is a better option, I guess.

Sadly, while you have to admire Weimann's work rate and compete level, his skill set just isn't high enough for those good attributes to translate into scoring chances and goals. And he's an attacking forward so that HAS to be the bottom line.

IMO you simply cannot afford to tie up money in both Weimann and his English alter ego Gabby Agbonlihor. One of those guys is fine. Two of them is overkill. I wish Andi nothing but the best as he moves along down the road. Derby is more his natural talent level and I hope he does great in the Championship.

Juventus have signed Croatia striker Mario Mandzukic from Atletico Madrid for £13.6m. The 29-year-old only joined Atletico last summer from Bayern Munich and scored 20 goals in 43 games for the Spanish side.

Mandzukic's last three moves have been to the side that lost the Champions League finals the season before his arrival (Bayern in 2012, Atletico in 2014 and now Juventus).

So Liverpool are, hopefully, going to cash in Raheem Sterling at £50m in hopes of landing Brazilian Roberto Firmino from 1899 Hoffenheim (becoming our third Brazilian), Colombian-born Carlos Bacca (Sevilla) and Venezuelan Salomon Rondon from FC Zenit, or quite possibly two of the three. Bacca (aged 28) seems inconsistent with the line that they weren't going to dole out significant transfer money for a player aged 27 or older. Firmino would be top quality, and Rondon had a good year last year after signing on at Zenit from Rubin Kazan.

Looks like the Firmino signing is done deal.

LLiverpool have signed the Hoffenheim forward Roberto Firmino subject to a medical, the Premier League club have announced.

The 23-year-old Brazil international has agreed what Liverpool describe as “a long-term contract” and will undergo a medical once he completes his commitments at the Copa América. Firmino has scored 47 goals in 151 appearances during his four and a half years in Germany and has scored four times in nine international caps, including Sunday’s Copa América winner against Venezuela.

I thought Huth was very good for the Foxes late in the season. When healthy, he's generally been a solid defender, if a bit thuggy.

Peter Crouch did tweet that he was sorry to see Huth leave Stoke but he was happy he could stop wearing shin pads at training :D
 
Still awaiting the photos on the team site (he's apparently on vacation in Vegas, so anything can happen in the 11th hour), but Nathaniel Clyne's arrival at Anfield is widely reported as imminent.

Liverpool have agreed a £12.5m deal for the Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne, who is set to become the club’s sixth signing of the summer. Clyne, who has been capped five times by England, will now undergo a medical at Liverpool and finalise his personal terms.

It's one thing to spend money to get players the top teams weren't coveting (Mario Balotelli, Dejan Lovren, Alberto Moreno). It's another to get ones that they were (Firmino, Clyne). I'm hoping this early activity shows our side's serious intent. But we still lack a strong striking option to partner Daniel Sturridge (who is injury prone).
 
Good piece of business that. IIRC his price tag was significantly higher back when they took him on loan. A little patience yielded a LOT of savings.
