Summer 2015 Transfer Thread

With Given at Stoke, it's fairly safe to assume that Begovic will be headed to Chelsea as Courtois' backup, to replace Cech.

From Villa's perspective losing these two couldn't be more different. Given was already scheduled to depart and they signed a fresh backup at some point earlier in the week in the form of former Norwich keeper Mark Bunn. Pretty solid signing there. But Delph? God that hurts. He signed a 4 year extension only back in January and was (rightly so) wearing the armband. Not to mention that he's their best central midfielder by 1,000s of miles. But apparently he insisted on the low-ish departure fee that City will be snapping him up for ... like 8.5 million or so ... so I guess he had his eyes set on bigger fish.

As mentioned ... if he actually breaks into their regular rotation starting 11, I'd be surprised. So Arab oil money marginalizes yet another English footballer. Shocker, right?

On the upside, Villa addressed their need for quality at defensive midfield by bringing in Senegal's Idrissa Gueye from Lille. He's a pretty fair player who should be coming into his own at 25 years old.

Isn't Delph at least the nominal replacement for Milner? Milner had 45 appearances last year, 32 in the League.

Not really, Delph can only play as one of the Central midfielders really. So he is competing with Toure, Fernandinho and Fernando for playing time.

Milner could do that job but he was also subbing for Silva, Navas and Nasri in the wide attacking roles.

Last season especially Milner got a lot more starts due to the fact that Nasri was often injuried and when fit struggling for form.

Entirely correct. Early on Villa experimented with Delph on the left side and he was just terrible. He's only ever been comfortable in the middle of the pitch. Which is why that signing make no particular sense to me from City's point of view. They're already loaded in all aspects of midfield. I know you need depth, but does it have to come at the expense of every other bloody team's best players? Try developing a couple of your own sometime.

The Guardian is reporting that Man U will sign Bastian Schweinsteiger from Bayern Munich

I do like that deal for United, Schweinsteiger is a bit past his best but I think if they split the playing time between him & Carrick it should keep both fresh enough to be very effective.

They lost Milner and needed a "homegrown" replacement for UCL purposes.

Guess what? You can get one of those virtually anywhere. Sign a young guy from a small club that wants and needs the money. You don't have to keep ruining International class players from lesser top division clubs. It's bad for everybody.

Yeah ... should be a good get for United. When Carrick was out their defense went all weak at the knees and Schweinsteiger is still one of the better defensive midfielders in Europe despite his troubles staying healthy. He's 30 with a lot of miles on him but I'd bet he's still got a good 3-4 years left in the tank if not over-used.

Good news for our Villa fans

Aston Villa captain Fabian Delph says he is staying at the club, following reports the midfielder was set to join Manchester City.

The England international has released a statement to "set the record straight" over his future.

"I'm not leaving," said Delph, 25, who signed a new four-and-a-half-year deal at Villa in January.

"I'm staying at the football club and I can't wait for the start of the Premier League season."

They're working on a long term deal worth £200k per week?!?!

Wait ... 200 grand a week to ride the subs bench behind Villa and Navas, both of whom are on similar wages? Why on earth would the club do that? Seriously, Sterling is probably better than Nasri (maybe? I dunno) but those other two are going to play if they're healthy. Period.

Yeah ... dodged a bullet there. I saw no way they could replace him for what they would have gotten in return and he is the heart and soul of their possession game. I looked it up and if Villa had been forced to more Delph for his reported trigger fee, they would have actually LOST a half a million pounds on the transaction if you include the entire payment package for him. Seriously.

And QPR has made a tidy £10 million, as they're entitled to 20% of whatever LFC gets for him.

According to this in the Telegraph, the initial fee is £44 million with the balance based on Sterling's appearance record.

The Telegraph article has a ticker that shows how much Sterling has earned since the page was opened.

The Mirror reports that former City players Scott Sinclair and Micah Richards talked him out of moving to Manchester.
