Tech Thread

Andy, former astronomer, got caught up in the order of magnitude of the stars: Oh Be A Fine Girl Kiss Me. Gotta think ahead before becoming a fucking magnitude M star. 🤣

aaaand.....Huawei is still behind Samsung and Toyota in solid state battery tech as far as I'm aware. Toyota expects to convert it's EV's over to solid state batteries in 2027 (so, the 2028 models) and Samsung's prototype (20 yr lifespan, 9 minute charge, 1000km range) is expected to be out in a few months.

Fwiw, I'll be surprised if Huawei's battery ends up at the stated specs unless they've blown by everyone and Chinese companies aren't usually the first to the party.

But regardless, solid state batteries are on the way and will probably be in everything within the next 5-10 years. 4-5x the energy density, much faster charging, much safer.

What does this mean for Tesla with the next 5-10 years?

Even ignoring what I feel about the company and it's survivability long term (he's dead Jim). At minimum, to produce a competitive EV product they're going to have to develop their own solid state battery, license someone else's, or buy someone else's.

Again, at minimum, whatever technology gap existed between Tesla and it's competitors (Tesla's have historically had ranges between charge on the higher end of the EV market) would be gone.

Tesla seems pretty married to it's lithium ion battery tech (which is proprietary) so what this probably means is that Toyota and everyone who ends up buying from Samsung and Huawei take a huge jump, first at the higher end of the price range but within a few years and the price of the tech comes down (early to mid 2030's) Tesla's with 600-700km range will be competing in classes against similar or lesser priced cars with 1500+km ranges.
