The 2017-2018 Training Camp / Pre-Season Thread

Or worse ... ECHL.

The whole thing is SO stupid. And the lesson is, you should never tweet when you are drunk, or under the influence ... Lup clearly regrets it but instead of snowboarding on some european mountain now he has to report to Marlies camp and get ready to ride the bus and make a run for the Calder cup. How exciting.

Theres no way Komorov plays centre. He was healthy all of last season and aside from taking the odd face-off, Babs literally never tried him there once. Having Moore and now Altonen around this year, there is no way he suddenly thinks Komo is the answer.

I bet Lupul is praying for a unfit to play ruling. He probably has gone on a carb crazed diet since he heard the news. I'm sure he wouldn't want to have to get back in shape and then ride the bus in the AHL

Based on precedent, Lupul will hurt himself on his way to the appointment.

As for lupul it's pretty clear to me and has been from day one that they do not want this guy around the kids. Cocaine's a hell of a drug.

Lance Hornby @sunhornby
Bodog odds on Eastern Conference winners: Pittsburgh 7/2, Tampa Bay 5/1, Leafs 6/1, Caps 13/2.

If this does backfire on Joff, he reports, practices a few times, reports pain where he had hernia surgery, goes back on LTIR.

More likely is that he gets checked by the 3rd party doctor and reports lingering pain and tenderness in that area and fails that physical too. There's no way that **** would rather be on a bus to Adirondack in January than on a lounge chair at the beach. He preferred the beach to hockey for most of his NHL career ffs.

I'm pretty sure he regrets opening his proverbial mouth on this one.

I also suspect he will fail the physical conducted by the 'independent' doctor, and we will all move on and continue to forget about our Robidas Island inhabitants. Except sensible. He'll bitch about this all season.

Whatever the specific reason, it does seem pretty clear that Lupul will not be around either the Leafs or Marlies whatever the result of his physical is.

Whether it's just telling him to stay home, or loaning him to another AHL or Euro club, who knows.

Yeah, if the independent doctor declares Lupul to be injured, the screams of conspiracy and favouritism from the usual corners of the hockey world will be pretty loud.

Which will be kind of fun, frankly. It's good for the Leafs to be hated again, instead of pitied.

Actually if the independent doc finds him healthy, That's the more interesting case.

If they find him unfit, then that corroborates the story, and the odds that Lou holds some weird power over this doctor makes for some conspiracy theory stuff, but you kind of have to trust that maybe they weren't lying.

However if the doc finds him fit, then the ramifications amp up. Does the league punish Toronto for lying on a medical report? Do the Leafs just have him ride the pine in the AHL or ECHL, or do they actually play him? Does the league move to put new rules in to prevent a case like this happening again? That's the more "exciting" case to wonder about.

Just because the second doctor reaches a different conclusion than the first doesn't make the second doctor the correct one.

I don't think the sens fanbase has any standing to chirp right now with how they endangered Maca's life last spring.

The second doctor finding him fit doesn't mean that the first doctor was compromised by the leafs. Doctors disagree on shit all the time.

Unless they can prove that the leafs didn't follow established medical practices or they leaned on the score to fudge his findings, there's nothing to punish for.

even if he comes back and plays, how long is it going to be before he's injured again? especially in the shape he's in now being out for so long.

Oh, for sure. But if the second one finds him fit, the narrative will definitely switch to "did the Leafs intervene in the first Doctor's recommendations". I'm not saying they will punish the Leafs or that there actually is anything illegal going on, but that's what the discussion will be about if the 2nd doc clears him.

Terry Koshan @koshtorontosun
Babcock on the fourth line: "I would say you have one spot open. Brownie or the other nine guys are playing, Marty is playing."

Terry Koshan @koshtorontosun
Moore, Aaltonen, Smith, Fehr all named by Babcock in the battle for the fourth-line centre job.

I think the D battle is interesting, as after 4 games I think I'd rank the performance thus far as :

Borgman > Rosen = Dermott > Carrick > Marincin

I like Borgman's game but it may be personal. I like Borgman brings physicality on top of what is otherwise a pretty good overall package, and he's also 1 year younger than Rosen. Now I like Rosen a lot too, especially how he jumps into offensive plays and plays like the 4th F, driving and creating plays. However given the makeup of our top 4 I like Borgman a bit more.

And Dermott has been very impressive too, but again given his age, I think he can develop in the AHL as Marlies' top pairing (with Liljegren?).

Carrick and Marincin could very well be on the outside looking in when the camp is over. 1 of them may stay as the #7 guy, and the other is waived. We're half-way into the pre-season, so a lot can still change between now and the opening night.

As for F's, as Babs said himself, there's just 1 spot open as Brown and Martin are not going anywhere. It means it's between Moore, Aaltonen, and to a lesser extent Fehr. I'll be surprised if it's not Moore.
