The 2017-2018 Training Camp / Pre-Season Thread

Any team that wants to win needs depth.

You're not going to know whether Kapanen can score 20 until the season is almost over, most likely.

Trade JVR and then what if Kapanen gets injured for the year - then what?

It sucks to lose an asset for nothing, but you play to win. Sometimes the value of the asset is in the wins it can bring you, as opposed to the return in trade it might net.

For instance, I'm not much of a fan of Bozak. But trade him and who steps in if Kadri goes down?

Somehow we fast forwarded to being in a position to win now. I don't want to compromise that just to get a prospect or pick back for guys that should contribute big this year.

I'm probably as confident that Kap would score 20 as JVR would 30.

Speaking of JVR, this is from 3 days ago, but Friedman had this to say:

12. T.J. Oshie’s quotes about wanting to stay in Washington are very similar to the ones last spring from James van Riemsdyk about Toronto. Chatting with Oshie last week, I wondered if his eight-year, $46 million extension becomes a template for what the Maple Leafs try to make this work. Van Riemsdyk is two years younger, and I’m not convinced they are eager to trade him.

Can we afford 5.75 with the big 3 getting raises soon?

Also, looks like Hunter is a big reason Naz is still a Leaf:

It was assistant general manager Mark Hunter who vouched for Kadri based on their time together with the Ontario Hockey League's London Knights.

"I feel Mark put his neck on the line for me and said, 'This kid can be a player,'" Kadri, now 26 recalled. "He had my back and I'll always have his. I want to make him look good."

Thank you, Mr Hunter.

yeah, while i'd love to move jvr/bozak for D, i'd rather have the injury depth than just dump them for picks.

Goal scoring isn't going to be an issue with this team, JVR or no. Too much firepower all the way through the forward group.

What if JVR gets injured for the year and we get nothing for him? This is a silly game to play. To answer your silly question, we move Leivo in.

Nylander moves to centre if it's long term, Komarov moves to centre to handle the checking line if it's short term. Forward depth is our strength, up and down the lineup. We can even replace Matthews temporarily with Nylander and not have it make a massive difference.

JVR is a key reason that 2nd line is borderline unplayable in late game situations with a lead. We wouldn't miss him nearly as much as you think.

Move Leivo in for JVR? What the hell has he done so far that everyone thinks this guy is so special?

Yes, JVR could get injured too. So could Matthews. Do we throw in the towel, or guard against these things by keeping the depth we have?

Obviously JVR is not untouchable. If you can get a younger player, who can play now and has potential to grow into something as good or better, pull the trigger. But if not, then keep him.

Nothing, but the argument is replacing JVR in the top 9 with Kapanen, not Leivo. You wanted to know what we were doing if Kappy got hurt. Same thing we would do if JVR got hurt, put Leivo in.

Kap hasn't shown he's ready for a top six role.

Leivo is a third liner.

They're interchangeable for each other maybe, but not JVR.

Marleau wasn't brought in for more scoring depth. He's got every bit of JVR's goal scoring skill but is a much more well rounded player. Babcock values well rounded players. Don't see how JVR sticks around.

The more little bits of information that filter through the more I think Polak isn't going to be ready.

All comes down to what JVR wants in his next deal. If he's looking for long term big dollars, move him. If he's willing to take less $$$ and not max term to stick around, then work something out.

Any contract including no trade conditions is going to be a problem. We have to save our money for the big guns.

Today's lines ...

Kristen Shilton ✔ @kristen_shilton
here are #leafs lines:
hyman-matthews-nylander
jvr-bozak-marner
marleau-kadri-komarov
martin-aaltonen-brown
kap-moore-sosh
fehr-smith-leivo

20 goal Downtown Brown on the 4th, Kappy on the 5th, Leivo on the 6th ... we're as deep as the ocean.

I'm all for having depth but we have too many bodies up front. No way we don't make a move before the puck drops in October.

i mean is babcock really that stubborn that he won't ever give matthews a game apart from hyman ever in his career?

I was just about to say the same thing.

I mean, was Marleau really brought in to play on the third line??

Matthews might get 90+ points with Marleau in instead of Hyman.
