Just heard Keefe talking about Marincin. This guy is definitely in his plans. Says he’s working him in, building up his confidence and getting him to where they think he can be. We should probably expect him to be with the big club the rest of the way unless he really falters.

I wonder if they’ve kept him this whole time on Keefe’s urging. Because Babs wasn’t in love with him or anything.

I was never sure how Babcock felt about him, but Marincin's always been a Dubas/Keefe guy. We acquired him in a draft-day deal in the 2015 draft Dubas was running as interim GM (after we fired Nonis, but before we hired Lou) and Marincin's always been an analytics darling.
The guy's been legitimately good for the Marlies too. He was one of the Marlies' top defensemen on the team that won the Calder Cup.
But to steal a baseball term, I think he's the classic quadruple-A player. His mobility with the puck and decision-making ability (especially under pressure) just aren't up to snuff in the NHL, and he's nothing more than a mediocre bottom-pairing defenseman.
As long as Keefe and Dubas don't envision him taking on a bigger role and he's purely here as the fringey veteran defenseman who's happy to sit in the pressbox for 90% of the games while making NHL money and enjoying the first-class perks of being on an NHL roster, then I'm fine with it I guess.

I think Muzzin is for sure gone. I can’t imagine Dubas signing him long term. They’re going to go after Pietrangelo and will need to fill in the rest of the spots with cheaper capable talent. If Sandin and Lilly step in and provide top 4 quality or higher, and Holl and Dermott are both resigned and in, then Marincin is the spare. It just feels like such a shame if both Barrie and Muzzin walk for nothing. Them plus JVR and Bozak are a lot of prime UFA talent allowed to just stroll out the door without any return.

That's what happens when you're good. You're trying to win so you don't trade your better players. I for one am getting used to it and I quite like it.
